Congratulations to the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive on their 2026 Collections Management Grant!

The Valdez Museum & Historical Archive will focus on preserving Valdez’s digital heritage by investing in preservation tools, staff training, and institution wide workflows and policies necessary to establish a strong foundation for "born-digital" collecting.

Congratulations to the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association on their 2026 Collections Management Grant!

The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association will contract with an archivist to focus on a 1999 donation from anthropologist and historian Lydia T. Black and to provide an assessment for processing additional records in the collections. The archivist will also provide training to help staff better manage the archives.

Congratulations to the Sitka Historical Society & Museum on their 2026 Collections Management Grant!

The Sitka Historical Society will contract a professional conservator to assess 22 items in their textile collection, conduct light surface cleaning where needed, and deliver hands-on training for staff, interns, and volunteers to ensure that their textile collection is cared for, handled, and stored according to best practices.

Congratulations to the Seward Community Library & Museum on their 2026 Collections Management Grant!

The Seward Museum will purchase three mannequins and one display case that will highlight objects from its permanent collection on three topics in Seward's history: Sports, World War II, and the Red Light District.

Congratulations to the Museum of the Aleutians on their 2026 Collections Management Grant!

The Museum of the Aleutians will conduct a phased condition check, catalog update, and rehousing of over 700 containers of archaeological material. These collections, excavated by leading Aleutian researchers, will be stabilized in archival housing and fully inventoried, ensuring long term preservation and accessibility for research, exhibitions, and community use.

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum needs our help! If you are in Juneau or have a connection to the museum—your museum or organization has partnered with them on a project, or you have used their collection for research, etc.—please consider writing a letter or email in support of the museum (more details below). If you're in Juneau, you can also testify in support of the museum tomorrow.

The CBJ Assembly is considering a variety of budget cuts including permanently closing the City Museum, divesting all items in the collection, and selling the Veteran's Memorial Building. Other suggestions include a drastic 50% cut to the City Museum budget which would reduce staff, operating hours, and programs.

There will be an opportunity to provide testimony to the Assembly on Wednesday, April 29th beginning at 5:30pm at the Special Assembly Meeting at City Hall. There will be a sign in sheet and testimony will likely be limited to 2 minutes.

If you want to testify by Zoom, you must notify the Municipal Clerk prior to 4pm the day of the meeting by calling 907-586-5278 and indicate the topic upon which you wish to testify. What an amazing transformation of your collections space, Ilanka Cultural Center! Congratulations to Nelly and your team for completing such great work with your CMF grant.

Thank you to Rasmuson Foundation for supporting important collections work like this through the Collections Management Fund grant! We're honored to have played a small role in this process. 🥰

We would like to express our deepest appreciation to Nelly Hand for taking on the massive task of organizing our collection space and documentation.

These before-and-after photos don’t fully capture the care, time, and effort she put into this monumental task. Every collection item now has a custom box (she made 198!) and updated paperwork, and the entire storage area has been thoughtfully organized with new systems in place for long-term care and continuity.

This work was made possible through support from the Collection Management Fund, provided by the Museums Alaska and the Rasmuson Foundation.
