Attention Student Architectural Historians

Announcing the 2025 HABS/SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship

Spend your summer conducting research on a nationally significant U.S. building or site and preparing a history to become part of the permanent HABS collection at The Library of Congress. The HABS/SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship, a joint program of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), permits a graduate student in architectural history or a related field to work on a 12-week HABS history project during summer 2025. The Fellow’s research interests and goals will inform the building or site selected for documentation by HABS staff. HABS is a program of the National Park Service and the Fellow is usually stationed at our Washington, District of Columbia. The award consists of a $12,000 stipend, and SAH conference registration and travel expenses up to $1,000.

Applications due December 31, 2024.

Inspiring the next generation of preservation and conservation stewards!

Earlier this week, Heritage Documentation Programs, NPS hosted a networking session for over thirty summer interns interested in historic preservation and heritage conservation.

Various program managers had an opportunity to talk about their organization, mission, and multiple interns made presentations on their summer projects. Afterwards, HABS/HAER/HALS held an “Open House” where participants were invited to tour our offices, see several of our laser scanners and surveying equipment, large-format film and high-resolution digital cameras, view measured drawings under development on computer screens and hard-copy, and talk with the summer architects about their fieldwork and drawings. Historians discussed their projects, research and findings.

Networking participants included:

▪️ National Trust for Historic Preservation, Hands-On Preservation Experience (HOPE Crew)

▪️ Army National Military Cemeteries, Arlington National Cemetery Cultural Resources Program and Arlington National Cemetery Conservation Program with Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP) interns

▪️ HABS/HAER/HALS summer architects, landscape architects, and historians hired through the Historic Black Colleges and Universities Internship Program (HBCUI), the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE), and the Latino Heritage Internship Program - LHIP (LHIP).
