Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) were domesticated in Mesoamerica approximately 7,000 years ago. Hernan Cortes brought the tomato back to Europe, beginning the Columbian Exchange which saw cultivated crops distributed across multiple continents. Some of that exchange distributed these tomatoes across Spanish Colonies, including into Texas.

The climate in Brazoria County is quite similar to that of the original tomato and these early varieties now can be found growing wild in the region. About 20 years ago the Museum discovered a batch of these growing in an abandoned fence row near a cow pasture north of West Columbia. These were recovered and are now preserved at the Museum as living relics of the Columbian Exchange. Every few years, including this year, we cultivate a new harvest of these seeds to preserve their viability.

"By any means necessary." — Malcolm X

Born May 19, 1925. Murdered February 21, 1965. Never forgotten.

His story is proof that one life can categorically impact the world. Evolution is not weakness, but the highest form of strength.

Malcolm X Day is observed every year in the United States to appreciate the contributions the civil rights leader made to society.

None of this happens without people like Janet Gipson, who pours her heart into making this event happen every single year. Thank you for letting us be part of it, Janet! 🙏❤️
And to Yesenia — assembling books for 110 students is no small feat, and your commitment to these kids is truly inspiring. Thank you for everything you do! 📚🙌

Janice's Storybook Summer began a new phase of a passionate project begun in 2008.
Volunteers will read to each first grade class and provide every first grader in the Brazosport Independent School District, Our Lady Queen of Peace and the Brazosport Christian School with his/her own book in May, the month of Janice's birthday. Books are also donated to students in Tulia, Texas, Janice's hometown. In the past 16 years, more than sixteen thousand books have been provided to young readers by the Janice's Storybook Summer Project.

The project is a memorial to Janice Eubank, who lost her battle with ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease in March, 2007. Janice taught in BISD for the final twenty-four years of her thirty-five year career. Her passion was teaching children.

Two of the main goals of this project are to impart literacy and to encourage the love of reading, goals Janice strongly supported. It takes the participation of individuals, businesses, civic and educational organizations working together to realize the fulfillment of Janice's Storybook Summer.

For more information about making a donation for this very worthy project, please contact Janet Gipson (979-236-3402 - [email protected])
