The beauty of nature is all around us. Calla, a U-M horticulturist, snapped this photo of a luna moth in the museum's native plant garden.
Luna moths are one of the largest moths in our region. Sightings like this are rare—these insects are nocturnal and only live for 7–10 days in their adult form. Adults cannot eat and live off stored energy from the caterpillar stage.

How did meat-eaters evolve into plant-eaters during the Permian Period? That’s what Keegan Melstrom, Ph.D., from the University of Central Oklahoma (and a U-M undergrad alumnus) is trying to figure out. He recently visited the U-M Museum of Natural History and U-M Museum of Paleontology to take 3D scans of fossil teeth and jaws that could help answer this question.
