Is the true symbol of American strength an enlightened statesman or a bare-knuckle boxer? 🥊🤜🏾🤜🏼
When the American founders looked to ancient Rome, they looked to ideals of republican virtue from statesmen like Cicero. However, a rival cultural counterpart emerged within American culture—that of the physically imposing gladiatorial body.

Join us for our next Digging Deeper lecture with Dr. Dean Hammer (Franklin and Marshall College) as he explores how gladiators and early boxers fought their way into the American zeitgeist.

This lecture is being presented in connection with the Kelsey Museum’s temporary US Semiquincentennial exhibition and the University of Michigan’s Democracy Week. It is supported by a grant from the U-M Initiative for Democracy and Civic Empowerment. 🇺🇸

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Come join us at the Kelsey this Sunday (9/13) at 2:00 PM as docent Robin Little guides visitors through an “Animals in the Ancient World” tour. From sacred cats in Egypt to mythical beasts across the Mediterranean, this tour explores how ancient peoples understood the natural world and their place within it.

Join us on Friday (9/8) for a Mid-Day Morsel tour, where docent Connie Powers will walk you through the highlights of the Kelsey collection. The Mid-Day Morsel tour begins at 12:30 PM. Tour participants should gather at our Maynard Street entrance a few minutes before the tour is scheduled to start.
