On this day in 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag, one year after the establishment of what would become the United States. The first flag was sewn with a needle and thread, similar to the bone needle pictured here—excavated by the University of Michigan at Karanis, Egypt. By the 18th century, needles were made of iron or steel, though some colonists still used bone ones. 🪡

Join us this Saturday for a Read and Look of Bethany Barton’s “I’m Trying to Love Garbage.” Designed for younger audiences, this program will explore how trash has been created throughout history and how different organisms—including humans—influence garbage now and in the future! 📚🚮

This event is recommended for ages 4-8. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

This Sunday, learn about how ancient Rome fed its people with docent Dave Horrocks. Study objects from the museum to understand how Rome’s food supply chain was able to support people across its sprawling empire! 🌾🏺

Check out a few pages from our semester scrapbook. 📖〽

The Kelsey Museum’s student assistants had the chance to visit the William L. Clements Library, the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry, and the Research Museums Center on campus this semester. They
explored collections and learned from museum professionals while also getting a peek at how different
institutions preserve and share history.
