Top Most Bloom Charms

We met where fireweed was young–
Still low along the ground.
Two strangers at the foot of wild —
Vast becoming abound —

…

Fireweed — oh patient purple flame,
blossoming all around,
grows from root to tip each year,
And marks the summer’s claim.

Each blossom climbing up the stalk, marks a day,
Consumed — Each petal — time to spend —
By the time the topmost flower opens,
Summer holds its breath.

I started these charms in Philly 26’ reminiscing my experiences in the Yukon, summer of 25’. My spirit still there, words came to mind and I started a poem to accompany these two charms. My love for the Yukon and my time there embodied.

The Serpent and the Holawaka

Wood heart, paper, glue, seed beads, freshwater pearls, thread
February 26’

I made this piece in reference to an Oromo story of the Serpent and the bird, an interaction between them that led to humanity’s mortality.

And I had originally made it for the Jinxed February art show in Philly, but didn’t get it done in time, now it lives in Philly still with friends.

I created these ornaments thinking they would go to friends and family last winter, however they took longer to make, and I still have ones that haven’t been finished. Over this past year I’ve slowly made and gifted away these ornaments. They have found their ways to homes across North America: from Philadelphia, where I started making them, to New Jersey, to Michigan, Maine, Utah, Vancouver, and the Yukon, were I sold them at an art residency. I will continue making Snow Flake Flower ornaments and they will continue finding new homes.

Fireweed Campfire
Spring 25’
Collaged: shincole prints, paper print jewelry, flat-back beadwork, red willow

This work explores the delicate balance between craft and natural cycles. The fireweed plant thrives in the aftermath of fire. Controlled fires and natural fires hang in a balance of cycles. Print, mixed media, and beadwork come together to reflect on the qualities of fireweed, a plant that emerges from ash, a regrowth after destruction. The beadwork is like pattern found in nature, and in Native culture beadwork symbolises community, story, and connection to place. In this piece the beadwork creates separate pieces of jewelry that focus rather than being merely decorative. The viewer is meant to consider the cycles of change and balance. Each bead, carefully placed, each part of the cycle, following a pattern, makes a difference.

I made this piece at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Center in Whitehorse Yukon Territory. I was inspired by the vibrant print summer fireweed flowers sprinkled throughout the city. So grateful to have participated the Shakaat Artist Residency Program at the center.

Pendant-Portrait On Hot Pink Skin
Spring 25’
Collaged: prints, latex, hair, beads, handmade washi, felt, thread, glue, foam board, jump rings, led lights

Pendant-Portrait On Hot Pink Skin brings together the boundaries between the natural world and human nature. A giant pendant lying on a canvas of “skin,” here the body is depicted with materials that link embodiment to landscape and humanness. The spinal column is gestured by circular beaded vertebrae. “Scape,” blurs the boundaries between body and landscape, and becomes a site of resistance. I found myself disconnected from my Native culture while growing up, I reconnect through landscape and scapes of the body–both of which become spiritual terrain. This is survivance: resisting erasure while maintaining presence, holding Indigenous agency alongside diaspora.

My work is me. Here I position myself in a hybrid existence with my prints which are intended to be consumed by you, my audience. With this gesture I resist the dominant culture’s packaging and consumption of Indigeneity by representing it in literal terms, my own terms.

Laid Bare My Gestured Scapes

Spring 2025

The two scapes in this piece juxtapose indoor and outdoor spaces. The indoor space offers the tiled domesticity of two pedestals in order to enable two forms of consumption, one to be consumed immediately and one to be carried into the future. The window invites the viewer to literally consume the artist’s prints, echoing a living conversation between artist, artwork, and viewer.
The wooden frame gestures toward an exterior scape that is my body. The body of the Indigenous woman is often “mapped” by the same forces of colonization that treat land as something to be owned, extracted from, and dominated. This piece resists colonization with subversion, embracing all parts of my identity, both Western and Indigenous by being continuous and fluid.
