Mrs. Ogle explains that they were out one beautiful day on the Bowling Green in front of their home. The children wanted to play horsey with their father.

So, her first child asks the second, "All those in favor of father being the horse say, Aye!"

Her second child says, "Aye!!"

The first also says, "Aye!"

The second child then looks at her father and asks, "Father, what do you say?!"

Then the Father says, "Neigh!"

"What delightful hosts are they --
Life and Love!
Lingeringly I turn away,
This late hour, yet glad enough
They have not withheld from me
Their high hospitality.
So, with face lit with delight
And all gratitude, I stay
Yet to press their hands and say,
"Thanks. -- So fine a time! Good night."

Mrs. Ogle watches as the gathered parties walk within Mr. Paca's gardens.

"SEE, Flavia, see that budding rose,
How bright beneath the bush it glows;
How safely there it lurks conceal'd;
How quickly blasted, when reveal'd!

The sun with warm attractive rays
Tempts it to wanton in the blaze:
A blast descends from eastern skies,
And all its blushing radiance dies.

Then guard, my fair! your charms divine;
And check the fond desire to shine
Where fame's transporting rays allure,
While here more happy, more secure.

The breath of some neglected maid
Shall make you sigh you left the shade:
A breath to beauty's bloom unkind,
As, to the rose, an eastern wind.

The nymph reply'd, "You first, my swain,
"Confine your sonnets to the plain;
"One envious tongue alike disarms,
"You, of your wit, me, of my charms.

"What is, unheard, the tuneful thrill?
"Or what, unknown, the poet's skill?
"What, unadmir'd, a charming mien,
"Or what the rose's blush, unseen? "

Mr. Carroll of Carrollton talking with Mr. Paca about the question of resolution with the crown or declare independence. His wife is in the summer house talking with the ladies.

"I do hereby recommend to the present and future generations the principles of that important document, as the best earthly inheritance their ancestors could bequeath to them; and pray that the civil and religious liberties they have secured to my country may be perpetuated to the remotest posterity and extended to the whole family of man.”
