This photo shows the Lang house and gas pumps at the corner of Lake and Fifth Street. Behind that, where Finch Park is today, is a field with a movie screen. As some of us remember, the screen was still in use in the 1950s to show free movies once a week.

Do you have pictures and memories of Arcadia's free movies to share?

Many of our early photos came from Arcadia Photographer A. H. Stockmen, and yet the only photo we have of his studio is this one, which is a closeup of the front of the building with an unknown skier in front. A note on the back says this is his photography studio on Lake Street in Arcadia. Do you have any idea where this building was? Do you have any other photos of the building?

We're working on a map of Arcadia buildings, and we're looking for photos. We have quite a few photos of the well known buildings such as the high school, the Arcadia Furniture Factory, the Martineau Drug Store and others primarily along Lake Street. However, we are missing many others such as family homes, ice cream shops, pool halls, and many more. Furthermore, many of the photos we have are copies of poor copies, distorted photos of photos, and faded or stained photos. Can you help?

Someone shared this photo with us. The building in the photo was described as being in Arcadia. The sign on the front of the building simply says "GROCERIES." That's all we know.
Can you identify the store? Where was it in town? What else do you know about it?

Kelly Campbell, Amy Cyr, and Kelly’s grandson Kasey LaVigne have been working through about 35 bags and boxes of donated books for the Museum’s book sale. Books we probably can’t sell were pulled out to continue their recycling elsewhere. We’ll keep the good ones for sale in the 2022 season. At a dollar for a hardback book, Museum visitors will find bargain reading material and support the Museum.

Today Rick Jones drained and blew out the pipes at the Museum. The building is winterized. Sniff. Thank you, Rick.

Yesterday we started turning down the heat a few degrees at a time. We’ll leave the heat on low to protect the artifacts and minimize the cost. It will still be warm enough to work there on collections and next season’s exhibits.

It’s hard to believe the 2021 season has ended. A lot has happened since last spring when we weren’t sure we could even open. We followed the CDC’s guidelines, and by June we were able to open. We had hand sanitizer and extra masks available, and we posted a summary of the CDC’s latest rules. Because we were closed completely in 2020, we scrambled to refresh our exhibits, add a new one, and do a thorough cleaning. We are so thankful for the docents who were able to welcome visitors.

Good news: The carriage house has a climate control system. Using our savings and with the help of a grant from the Manistee County Community Foundation, we can now heat, cool, and dehumidify that building. This will help us expand our sensitive material storage and protect a wider variety of exhibits there.
