🇺🇸 The Ribbon That Created Memorial Day. This G.A.R. Ribbon represents the Grand Army of the Republic, the organization founded by Union veterans that created Decoration Day (now Memorial Day) in 1868. Standing here in Memorial Park, founded by G.A.R. member Dr. John Best, we remember their lasting legacy of "Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty". Dive into Arlington Heights’ Civil War history and beyond in our new exhibit, "Stars and Stories," opening June 29th!

The wedding of Emma Kirchhoff and Charles Klehm took place on September 20, 1899, performed by Rev. Noack in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Emma helped prepare food for 600 guests and walked to the church from her home at what is now 400 West Northwest Highway.

Our curatorial staff has been very busy with our new exhibit, “Why Keep That?” opening May 1st! Join us for the opening reception from 6-8PM.

Not every museum object is rare or famous. In our newest exhibit, Why Keep That?, step behind the scenes to see how even the most ordinary items can tell powerful stories about the past. Follow the journey an object takes from donation to preservation, and explore unexpected pieces from our collection—like a simple train ticket or a well-used waffle iron. You’ll learn how everyday objects help preserve the lives, memories, and moments that shape our history.
