Through her large scale installations, Megan Mueller reorients the viewer’s relationship to public space. She brings the outdoors inside and moves the ground to the wall, making it the center of attention.
Megan creates these installations by scanning decorative terrazzo sidewalks she finds throughout Los Angeles with a flatbed scanner. She prints the scanned images at scale and reconstructs them to create a life-size reproduction.
The installations included in Within Reach document three different entrances to Wilshire Tower, a nine-story building on the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles. When it opened in March of 1929, the building housed two department stores. The name of one, Desmond’s, still graces the building’s entrance, a reminder of a moment of capitalist optimism before the 1929 financial crash.
See Megan’s work on view as part of Withjn Reach! The exhibition closes this Sunday, May 24.
