Arlington's State Rep Sean Garballey , co-chair of the Special Commission on 250th Anniversary Celebration of the American Revolution, and Jonathan Lane, Executive Director of Rev250 are shown at the State House with a faithful replica of Ezekiel Russell's 1776 Declaration of Independence. Painstakingly hand-printed by Gary Gregory using 18th cent. techniques, these replicas will be sent to all 351 communities in Massachusetts. You can join Sean for a reading upon its arrival in Arlington on Wednesday, July 8 at 7PM at Arlington Historical Society & Jason Russell House!

The Jason Russell House & Museum is officially open for our summer season!

Starting this week, visitors can now stop by Thursday through Sunday from 1–4pm.

Whether you’re returning for another visit or stopping by for the first time, we’d love to welcome you to the museum this summer. Come explore the Jason Russell House, see the surviving bullet holes from April 19, 1775, and learn more about Arlington’s remarkable history.

Re-Examining Our Roots: The Declaration of Independence at 250

The Arlington Human Rights Commission invites the community to a talk and conversation exploring the Declaration of Independence and its meaning today. Michael Kozuch, K–12 Director of History and Social Studies for Arlington Public Schools, will provide historical background on the Declaration and its continuing importance. Participants will then join break-out discussions on key concepts in the Declaration and their relevance in the present day.

The program will conclude with remarks by Howard Winkler, former President of the Arlington Historical Society and past President of the Arlington Civil Rights Commission, who will offer a tribute to Black Bostonian abolitionist Prince Hall and his insistence that the Declaration’s promise that “all men are created equal” applied to Black people as well.

The bloody events that took place in Menotomy, now Arlington, on the first day of the American Revolution have often been told in detail. But what happened in Memotomy after April 19, 1775?

This year’s Louise Ivers Memorial Lecture will explore how Menotomy, then a rural precinct of Cambridge, recovered from the violence of that day and carried on while war continued just miles away in Boston.
