Join us tomorrow evening for First Thursdays at Knapp Heritage Park! We're excited to join the fun in Downtown Arlington for this community event.

We'll have cabin tours, walking tours, art demonstrations, and live music:

🏛️ Open House & Tours: Tour our historic mid-1800s cabins and 1910 schoolhouse.

🚶‍♂️ Historic Walking Tours: Take a 30-minute guided walking tour through history in downtown. Tours depart from Knapp at 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Space is limited; be sure to reserve your spot.

🎨 Drawing Demonstration: Our resident artist Keisha Smith will be there with an easel to draw live. Plus, she'll have some of her commemorative Arlington150 prints and coffee mugs for sale. Be sure to get yours!

🎸 Live Music: Enjoy live acoustic music from local favorite Max Segura from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM!

All activities are free and open to the public!

Born in Fort Worth, Robert Perry Mills Jr. (1941–1967) graduated from Arlington High School in 1959. After completing his studies at Arlington State College (now UTA), Perry later graduated from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, becoming a practicing dentist.

When duty called, he answered. About 350 U.S. Navy dentists served in the Vietnam War, alongside other medical personnel. As a commissioned Lieutenant in the Dental Corps of the U.S. Navy, Dr. Mills volunteered for Vietnam duty, arriving in August 1967 to serve in a field hospital.

Tragically, Lieutenant Mills was mortally wounded a short time later, on November 2. He was the first Navy dental officer killed in action in Vietnam. Lieutenant Mills is buried at Moore Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Arlington. His decorations included the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and National Defense Service Medal, among others. We remember his service with gratitude.

In 1998, the Robert Perry Mills Medical and Dental Clinic at NAS JRB Fort Worth was named in his honor. Inside the clinic, a dedicated display features informative and memorial plaques detailing his legacy. Dr. Mills is also honored with a scholarship at UTA.

Today, we celebrate what would have been the 60th birthday of Darrell Lance Abbott (1966–2004), better known as Dimebag Darrell, the iconic and influential guitarist for the heavy metal band Pantera.

Dimebag's unique playing style, larger-than-life persona, and gregarious personality made him respected by his peers and beloved by fans, especially in North Texas.

Pantera formed in Arlington in the early 1980s, independently releasing their first album in 1983. The band's 1990 major-label release "Cowboys From Hell" ushered in a new era, with Pantera becoming one of the decade's most popular and successful heavy metal acts.

In conjunction with Dimebag's birthday, today—August 20, 2026—is officially proclaimed as Pantera Day in Arlington, celebrating their enduring impact on music and their lasting legacy.
