THROWBACK THURSDAY

Let's solve a mystery! 🕵️‍♀️ Who were these ladies in uniform? Do you know what club or organization they belonged to?

This photo was taken by Bob Lindsey, who worked for the Asheville Chamber of Commerce. We don't know the date the photos were taken, but I'm guessing it was sometime in the '60s or early '70s.

As most of you know, our complex originally housed Biltmore Industries, a noteworthy enterprise in the history of American Craft that produced some of the finest handwoven wool fabric in the country. This photo was taken in front of the Biltmore Homespun Shops. The gentleman shaking hands in the first photo is Harry Blomberg (who was the owner/manager), and next to him in the foreground is Bob Stevens, who started working for Biltmore Industries when he was just 15. Bob retired sometime in the 70s.

If you have friends or family that lived in Asheville during this timeframe, have them look and see if they recognize the uniforms or any of the women shown.

“Few people know about Biltmore Industries and the famous people who wore this fabric,” Gary Corn says, noting that wool production at Biltmore Industries began to dwindle in the 1960s. Production officially ceased in 1981. “When we have our blazers on, we’re like walking history.”
