Dear Riverview Station artists, RADA artists, friends of the River Arts District, and community members,
During this Holiday season, we would like to thank so many in the community for their help, concerns, and outpouring of support since Hurricane Helene swept through our beloved community and flooded our beautiful building, Riverview Station.
From the beginning, about 30 years ago, our vision for Riverview Station was that it would be a home for artists, community and all that makes Asheville unique. Following the devastation from Hurricane Helene, our dearest wish has been to see that community return. That’s why we are excited to share that there is a path forward. GBX Group has acquired the property and will be facilitating much-needed investment to restore Riverview Station and to secure its place, once again, as the gateway to the River Arts District. We are excited to see their vision, which continues to center around artists, come to life!
It has truly been an honor to serve our community over the years. The relationships we forged while cultivating and building our vision with artists, vendors, and community have been the highlight of our lives. We can’t express our gratitude enough to each of you. Stay tuned for more to come in January!

Riverview Station in the RAD is having a volunteer cleanup tomorrow Saturday, February 8th from 8:45 a.m. – 4 p.m at 191 Lyman Street.

We will focus on getting the remaining debris and trash to the road for FEMA to pick up.

We will be working from 8:45 a.m. – 4 p.m. If you want to come, please arrive between 8:45 – 9:15 a.m. OR 12:30 – 1 p.m. You can stay as long as you want, but if you arrive during those time frames, it helps us to do the volunteer intake process.

Most of the debris has been eliminated at this point, but there is still quite a bit right up against the building, as heavy equipment wasn’t able to get that previously.

Item Needs:
Pickup trucks
trailers
wheelbarrows
5 gallon buckets
contractor bags

Thanks so much! We look forward to seeing you tomorrow! If you are not able to come, please consider donating to our recovery effort at www.riverviewstation.com

It is officially four months since Hurricane Helene came through and devastated our region, the River Arts District and Riverview Station. We are solidly in the long-haul phase of recovery—the part where everything seems to take too long and is complicated by lots of red tape and bureaucracy.

It has also been complicated by winter, freezing temperatures and flu season. All of which has led to much less progress over the last month than we had hoped. For all of those reasons, All Hands and Hearts hasn’t had a full 5-day week of cleaning and pressure washing since Christmas. They live in a communal environment, so when a few people get sick, it spreads to everyone. That accounted for one week out. And arctic weather has accounted for the rest of the 2-3 day work weeks in January. Snow and icy roads shut things down one week. Then the temporary water line froze and burst and took a couple days to fix. This week it was just too cold to do any cleaning or pressure washing—it would have turned the entire building into an ice skating rink!

We are hoping this is the worst of the bad weather and things are going to warm up a little bit and stay that way so we can finish up the cleaning process. All Hands and Hearts continues to be committed to our project and seeing it through to completion. If you want to help, you can call 828-712-6928 and speak to Jaime and mention that you want to work at 191 Lyman Street. They are currently here Tuesdays – Saturdays.

On the bureaucracy front, we are still working on getting our building permits. We have been approved by the floodplain administrator, which was the biggest and most difficult hurdle. Now, we are updating our architectural plans to reflect the actual state of the building before the flood occurred. Once that is complete and submitted to the city, we are hoping that our permits will be approved. Hopefully within the next two weeks. Fingers crossed.

On the funding front, nothing has come through from the SBA. So, we are still fundraising. We have reached 27% of our goal for Phase 1! Please help us by sharing our donation link and getting the word out and donating if you can.

We are so grateful to each one of you for the assistance you have provided. Your support has meant the world to us and is keeping us motivated through this difficult winter.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our fundraiser recently. We met our match! We are so grateful to all of you!

We have completed the pressure washing in the upstairs brick buildings and are starting to work on cleaning the downstairs. We moved the temporary water line downstairs yesterday and will be able to start pressure washing next week.

I spent several hours this morning reviewing photos from one week after the flood. Feelings of grief washed over me as I experienced again the devastation of so much lost art and beauty. At the same time, I acknowledged how far we have come since then. Each shovel of mud, each removed drywall board, every single screw that has been pulled out of a stud has gotten us closer and closer to reopening. We will keep on moving forward every day and eventually we will get there!

But the pictures also reminded me that the devastation that the flooding caused at Riverview Station is so vast that we will not be able to fully reopen without financial support from the community.

Flood insurance has only covered a small portion of the damages to our property, the Small Business Administration has not offered us a loan, and FEMA doesn't help small businesses. We have received several small grants, for which we are very grateful, but there is a very large gap between the funds that we need to rebuild and the funds that we actually have.

We are so grateful for the generosity we’ve received so far in our effort to raise $200,000 by the end of the year to support the rebuilding of Riverview Station. However, we still have a long way to go to reach our goal, and we need your help!

Right now, you have a unique opportunity to double your impact to the artists of the River Arts District. Thanks to a generous donor, every dollar you contribute will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $4,000 – but only if you donate by December 31st.

Your contribution, no matter the amount, will go directly toward rebuilding the studios and helping the talented artists of Riverview Station get back to work. Every bit helps us reopen their creative spaces as quickly as possible.

We hope you’ll join us in supporting these incredible artists by making a donation today. Together, we can restore the heart of Asheville’s arts community and make sure the artists who define our city can return back to the River Arts District.

Right before Thanksgiving, someone stole all our supplies from a locked room—generators, pressure washers, compressor, hoses, hand tools, lights, respirators, and more. This was a real punch in the gut after we had worked so hard for so many weeks just to get the mud and debris out of the building.

Miraculously, our community came to the rescue with many donations and people who went out and bought us replacements. We were able to get back to work a couple of days later.

Unfortunately, the thefts have exposed a harsh post-Helene reality: even securing supplies in a shipping container isn’t necessarily safe, and the police warned us that even building materials could be stolen. We are planning to try to work with our neighbors to come up with some sort of security solution. We are now bringing our equipment home with us every night until we come up with another solution.

Despite these challenges, there IS good news. We met with the fire marshal and received information that means we can allocate more of our Phase 1 funds toward opening studios. This means we can open more studios as part of Phase 1 than we had initially thought, which is a significant win!

While we’re facing challenges, we remain committed to moving forward, and your continued support is what keeps us going. We’re actively working on finding a safe solution for our materials and will keep you updated.

Thank you all for everything you've done to help us. It has given us so much strength and courage to keep moving forward. Your generosity truly makes all the difference during these tough times. We are so grateful to each of you!

A lot of people have asked if we are still working tomorrow despite the theft last night and the answer is yes! We will be here from 9 a.m. - 4p.m. on Saturday, November 23rd. We are still picking up trash and debris, and All Hands and Hearts is still able to scrub everything down with cleaning solution, which is the thing they do before they pressure wash.

A great deal of our supplies and equipment were stolen last night. We have already had lots of donations for many of the items, but we still need a few things.

It would be amazing if you all could check out some of the distribution sites (Ideas: Silverados, Big Ivy Community Center in Barnardsville, the supply depot at 550 Highway 9 in Black Mountain) and see if anyone has any of the following and bring them to us.
Here is a list of the items we still need:
• 4 electric pressure washers
• AAA batteries
• Small battery-powered lanterns
• 1 Folding Metal Bench
• 2 battery operated ryobi lights
• Snacks
Could someone go to the Asheville Tool Library for us and see if they can find any of these items (or any of the items above):
• 5-in-1 tools
• Wire cutters
• Bullnose pliers
• Longer Phillips head bits
• Multitool blades
• Two 50 foot ¾ in heavy duty hose
• 7 in catspaws
• Lots of scrapers

Thank you all so much for your support!
