Revolve

Revolve Our mission is to gather in one place the creative energies of the Asheville area, represented by a variety of viewpoints and forms of expression. A craftspace.

An experiment. A crucible. revolve is a space meant to serve and to foster innovative thinking about politics and poetry, science and music, food and architecture, word and image. A gallery/performance space as well as a classroom, revolve promotes contemporary, cross-disciplinary collaborations where diverse and thought-provoking writers, teachers, students, and makers can come together to agree,

disagree, write, create, make, exhibit and perform. Located in Asheville’s growing River Arts District and situated in two open, large, and welcoming spaces—one on the ground floor and the second above it—revolve is already connected with academic institutions in and around Asheville, including UNCA, Western Carolina University, and Warren Wilson College. As such, revolve can offer a wide range of opportunities for both students and teachers in addition to artists, writers, and performers as well as local restaurateurs, farmers, and engineers. Offering seminars and workshops in stimulating subjects such as From Cyanotypes to Pixels: Photograph as Keepsake, Document, and Object; Dreams and Dream Journaling For Creative Thinking; and Sex in American Cinema, revolve seeks to generate an environment that fosters open and productive dialogue to inspire, to push, and to challenge everyday assumption and idea. revolve seeks to evolve how we humans view the world and transform how we both share and shape that vision. see. think. make.

It's finally Spring! Thanks to the performances last night, we are feeling well-bloomed into Spring. Revolve has experienced some changes over the last couple years, just like we all have. It has not been easy, but it has always been worth it. One thing that has remained the same is how dedicated we are to serving as a gathering + performance space for our community's creators. Being able to safely gather to experience this work the way the creators want it to be experienced is something to be treasured! Be sure to check out these artists if you aren't familiar with them already, and stay tuned for our next happenings. We are so lucky to have the community we do, Revolve would be nothing without y'all! To everyone who has our back- thank you for supporting us so we can support you.

Have you been by to check out our current exhibition, A Bad Idea / Una Mala Idea? This work was made + organized by the teens of .vdlj. It's powerful, alive, and all for sale. 100% of your money spent on this art goes back into funding the Word On The Street program for BIPOC teens. Plus, they will be hosting a dance party with this SATURDAY!

The inspiration behind the exhibit was created during a pitch meeting for the exhibit, when one of the participants exclaimed “This is a bad idea.”

“We knew it wasn't a bad idea, but we were definitely nervous to explore getting out of our comfort zones to execute this whole project–and that was scary. Perhaps it is a bad idea, but one we were willing to take the challenge of,” Laura Padilla, program coordinator for WOTS, said.

Participants were challenged to create individual pieces and co-created murals exploring this theme. The ideas behind their works range from exploring the concepts of capitalism and patriarchy, to mental health and using their art as a way to express their emotions. The pieces the participants created are a way for these students to cope.

Laura said “This art exhibition is important because it is sending a message to our youth that art and creativity is actually accessible to them, and what might be perceived as a bad idea can actually result in something really great. I think we tend to underestimate the power and the beauty of the teenage soul, but they have so much to say and so much to give. We are going through a lot as humanity, our ancestors have gone through so much and we want to give access to the teens to leave a print of their perspectives, emotions and hopes." Come by and check out this phenomenal work + buy some original art! Be sure to follow .vdlj for even more updates!

🚨 OPEN CALL for intern/artist/documentarian/content creator 🚨

Stipend:  $200

Job description:  Create a video to be an element of THIS SKIN I’M IN: A VISUAL NARRATIVE photo exhibition.  The video would be a compilation of 3—45 second “define your selfie” clips of members of the LGBTQIA+ community.  The time frame would be April 1-April 30.

The clips would then have to be edited into a single running video.  This video would then become an element of the exhibit.  The video would run on a loop and also become a part of an app that would contain all the assets of the exhibition.

For more clarity, here's part of the exhibition description-

THIS SKIN I’M IN: A VISUAL NARRATIVE OF SELF

This juried photography exhibition is an opportunity for the LGBTQIA+ community to express their personal experiences of queerness through a series of images.  Embracing the becoming of one’s own self and the definition one chooses is an often complicated, deeply personal, and at times an invisible journey. This exhibition provides opportunity for emerging and established artists to tell their own stories expressed through the language of images.

The “define your selfie” clips would contain each person’s answer to the question: How do you define yourself and how does the agency of self-definition make you feel? The question doesn’t have to be literally asked, but is a launching point for the creator.
