Dear Friends,
Today I am writing you with gladness. Gladness for having each and every one of you in my life. In 2012, I set out for a journey, to create an arts program for those who had been personally impacted by the challenges created in our world. A place where individuals could gather make art together, often creating beauty out of chaos, with paints, paper, or whatever other materials we might have had on hand. More importantly, friendships were forged that no winds of change could ever knock down.
For many years, it seemed as though we were building the vision we had for Aurora Studio: we had an associate membership in the River Arts District; area artists who taught many of our workshops and for a short time, we even had our own space. Unfortunately, one of the things we lacked was a large and strong enough board to help us grow into our vision.
However, this DID NOT prevent us for reaching our goal of hosting weekly workshops. For eleven years, friends would gather to make art. It was a supportive place where people could come each week and know that there would be arts materials that would offer a means of self-expression and sometimes a needed distraction away from the many challenges faced daily (whether they be in regards to health, mental health or housing). Aurora Studio offered a respite with snacks, lunch and a color palette to match.
I, personally, made many unusual life choices, in order to help Aurora sustain a place in Asheville. In 2023, I needed to move. As many of you know, the last year has found us hosting 2-day workshops as a means of staying in touch, creating art and holding space for us all.
It has filled my heart with great joy, being with all of the participating artists over the last twelve years. I have learned so much and am so very grateful to all of our visiting artists. I am appreciative of all of our donors and volunteers who gave money or of themselves year after year.
I know that a place like Aurora is needed in ALL of our communities. I wish I could have done more to make it sustainable and pass the torch to someone who could carry on our mission. Unfortunately, that is not the case. My life will forever have more meaning for the love each of you has brought to it. I thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
It looks like I will be moving further north in the spring (not as far as Vermont, possibly Virginia). Many of you have my phone, and this email address, feel free to write!
In gratitude,
