For the past nine years it has been both an honor and pleasure to serve the wonderful people of St. Clair County as Archive Director.

During my time here, I have learned so much from so many excellent people. Furthermore, I have made friendships which have sustained me and helped me grow, not only as a historian, but also as a person; and I am grateful for each and everyone who has impacted my life.

Friday will be my final day and afterwards, there will be a short transition period. I am happy that, in my almost decade’s long tenure, I have provided this institution with effective administration and helped it grow through the acquisition of many wonderful artifacts and displays, financially, and by expanding knowledge of St. Clair County’s important history through our page.

Thank to everyone for your kindness and support over the years.

Hugh Hardy Williamson: County and Community Leader (December 27, 1931 – July 24, 1998)

The 7th child born to Mr. Jesse Collins Williamson, who owned and operated a blacksmith shop in Pell City for over thirty years, and Mrs. Elsie Frances (Sides) Williamson, Hugh was a proud son of St. Clair County and was descended from Rev. Jesse Collins, a pioneer and early settler this county, who served as Circuit Clerk from 1834 – 1842 and was pastor of Ashville First Baptist Church, Broken Arrow Baptist Church, and Hopewell Baptist Church.

A lifelong resident of Pell City and member of Pell City First Baptist Church, Hugh graduated from Pell City High School and six months after the beginning of the Korean War, enlisted in the Air Force on January 3, 1951. During the war, he was a radio operator on a KC97, a refueling aircraft, serving under the Strategic Air Command, and was honorably discharged on December 10, 1954. He then earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Jacksonville State University and his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from the University of Alabama.

On November 16, 1952, he married Ms. Amelia Ann Starnes, daughter of Mr. Alfred Gaston Starnes and Mrs. Georgia Louella (Coleman) Starnes at Pell City First Baptist Church, with Pastor J.W. Fagan officiating. The couple would be blessed with forty-five years of marriage and welcomed a son, Gaston Collins Williamson, whom they named for his grandfathers, into the world on January 5, 1954.

Mr. Williamson’s life was dedicated to his community and county. He served as Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent for the county school system, as well as Superintendent and Board Member for the Pell City School System. He was elected to two terms as Mayor of Pell City, from 1976 – 1984 and was actively involved in many civic organizations, such as: the VFW and American Legion, Lion’s Club, and Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Board of Directors for Union State Bank for some 21 years.

Mr. Williamson’s portrait was donated by his son, Gaston, who recalled that he was often heard to say: “Teach everyone the same from the janitor to the CEO; they are all part of your team.”

THE GLOBE at ASHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

(Picture taken from the 1963 Ashville High School Yearbook and information supplied by Mr. John Banks, Class of 1963)

The story of the globe begins with Ashville High School Principal R. M. Satterfield, who would acquire used surplus materials for the school, with a jeep and tractor being two such examples. Mr. Satterfield dispatched John Banks and a classmate in the City's flat-bed garbage truck to the Army Air Force Base 829, later called the Gadsden Air Force Station, to take possession of the globe, which had been used in a war room for the purpose of planning operations and conducting scenarios, and was equipped with lights that pinpointed large cities and other strategically significant areas.

Mr. Banks recalled that globe created a lot of attention because it rotated on the flat-bed as he and his classmate were driving back to the high school.

No further information was available on the globe and it appears to have been removed by the time of the Class of 1964's graduation. If you have any information on or memories of the globe, please put them in the comment section, thank you.

~ Special thanks to Mr. Tim Carlisle for bringing the existence of the globe to our attention and to Mrs. Judith (Ramsey) Abernathy for putting us in contact with Mr. Banks.

JILL’S RESTAURANT CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

(Originally published in the St. Clair Observer - June 5, 1975)

“Jill’s Drive-In restaurant, which was one of the first in a fast-growing string of businesses on Pell City’s busy Highway 231 North, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this week. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Goodwin, owners of the business, are pictured with a group of their employees in front of the familiar Jill’s sign as they prepare to go ‘all out’ in celebration of the anniversary.

From left, Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin; Marie Spears, Sue King, Joy Rich, and Joyce Perry. “We are proud to be a part of the growth and progress of Pell City business community,” Mr. Goodwin said, “and we are grateful to all our customers for making it possible.””

ST. CLAIR COUNTY JUDGE NAMESAKE OF EAST LAKE SCHOOL

In 1871 a young 25 year old Ashville attorney was appointed Probate Judge of St. Clair County. His name - Elisha James 'E.J.' Robinson, and he had to first come to St. Clair County in 1857, at the age of eleven, when his parents, George and Mary, had left Newberry County, South Carolina and purchased a farm two-and-a-half miles outside of Ashville.

In the summer of the second year of the great conflict known as the American Civil War, he found his place amongst his Southern brothers and joined Company E of the 53rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. On December 13, 1864, the discharge of artillery caused the loss of his right foot and he was honorably discharged. The young man read law and passed the bar when he was only twenty-two.

Although not originally from St. Clair County, E.J. Robinson had so endeared himself to his new home that its citizens retained him as Probate Judge for fifteen more years until 1886. Around this time he built the beautiful Victorian home, which still stands today in Ashville. Afterwards he served as Mayor of Ashville and later retired to East lake, selling his home to James and Clara (Inzer) Montgomery, the daughter of Judge John Washington Inzer.

The role of public servant found him in his retirement and the former judge served as Mayor of East Lake for a number of years, being very active in promoting public schools there. Robinson Elementary School was named for him.

He is buried in East Lake Cemetery with his third wife, the former Laura Weatherall.
