Incumbent Sheriff Carrol Whitmire and Hunter Thompson at the debate at the Opticon Theater in Snowmass in October 1970.

“Whitmire knew how to handle drunks, car wrecks, cowboys, and that stuff, but had no idea how to handle the new wave of young people, or drug people— people with a different agenda. The business community was afraid. They thought that the new crowd on their way here was going to eat the local babies and cats, and all they did was make flutes. Some guy jumped up and asked Hunter, ‘What are you going to do about drugs? Everybody knows you take drugs.’ He said, ‘Well, I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. This is the only time I’ll talk about it. I do not like needle-injected drugs. I’m dead against them, and I won’t chew jimsonweed on the job. Other than that, I don’t want to hear anything about it.’ Afterwards people were coming out of the auditorium, and one guy said to me, ‘You know, he didn’t sound like a moron. He didn’t sound like a freak to me. He makes a lot of sense.’ And another guy said, ‘Well, hell yes. He’s got a degree from Columbia’—which was nonsense, of course.” —Tom Benton.

Flying Dog was founded in 1990 by physicist and philanthropist George Stranahan in Aspen, Colorado, with the help of his close friend Hunter S. Thompson and the British artist Ralph Steadman, who created the brewery’s distinctive label art. Steadman’s chaotic illustrations, combined with Thompson’s irreverent spirit, helped define the brewery’s bold and rebellious identity.

In 1995, Flying Dog released its Good Beer, No Sh*t” campaign, featuring Steadman’s artwork. The Colorado Liquor Commission banned the beer, claiming the slogan was inappropriate under state obscenity laws. Flying Dog challenged the decision in court, arguing that the ban violated its First Amendment rights. With support from the ACLU and widespread public attention, the brewery ultimately won the case. The victory became a landmark in the fight for free expression in commercial and artistic work.

The Flying Dog case is now remembered as a powerful example of creative freedom and the enduring collaboration between Stranahan, Steadman, and Thompson, three figures who believed in challenging authority and celebrating the untamed spirit of the American West.

Over time, Johnny has created hundreds of paintings that illustrate his path through life; from early portrayals of his mother to more recent emotive works. Whether impasto or collaged, his art is emotion made flesh. It’s the story of his life. “I’ve always used art to express my feelings and reflect on those who matter most to me like my family, friends and the people I admire.”

“Owl Farm 1992”

The owl on this work titled “Mescalito” appeared on the famous “Patriot’s Arise” poster that Thomas W. Benton created for HST during his Freak Power Campaign for Sheriff of Pitkin County in 1970.
Originally, it was on the letterhead of Hunter’s stationary beginning in 1967. Besides the “Gonzo” symbol and the “Thompson for Sheriff” graphics, the Mescalito owl is perhaps the best known image associated with Hunter S. Thompson.
HST was well-known as a night owl and his mother had suspected this was the inspiration for the name of Hunter’s property “Owl Farm.”
“Mescalito” is a work from Hunter’s collection of “Shot Gun Art.” Hunter fastened posters onto a wooden backing, filled small bottles with different colors of paint that were strung up, and shot them at the posters.
The writer also liked using cans of spray paint and markers to embellish his creations.

In August of 2005 Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes were blasted into the sky out of a 153-foot monument that Hunter, the writer and avatar of “gonzo” journalism, designed himself almost 30 years ago.
The sendoff took place at his farm in Woody Creek, CO and was attended by Hunter’s family and friends — including Senator John Kerry, Lyle Lovett, Bill Murray, the musician David Amram, Ed Bradley and locals like Bob Braudis, the sheriff of Pitkin County.
The extravagant memorial was staged and choreographed by Hollywood and underwritten by his friend the actor Johnny Depp.
