Join the Clatsop County Historical Society for Talking Tombstones XXI: Grave New Day, a free living-history program at Ocean View Cemetery.

Costumed interpreters will share the stories of people from Clatsop County’s past in the historic cemetery setting.

Today marks Flavel Friday and National Bosses' Day. For nearly three and a half decades, Captain George Flavel successfully ran a prominent bar piloting and towing business at the mouth of the Columbia River. He is featured in this photograph (back row, center) alongside five of his fellow bar pilots, circa 1860.

It's Nellie Flavel Friday! Happy 168th Birthday to Nellie Flavel on October 12. She was the middle child between George Conrad and Katie, born in Astoria, OR in 1858. She was a talented musician, a world traveler, and active in the Presbyterian Church of Astoria. In 1933, she was the last of her immediate family to die at the age of 74. She left the Flavel House to one of George Conrad's middle daughters, Patrica Jean. Cheers to Aunt Nellie!
