January 19, 1906

The city council passed a measure last evening entitled, “An ordinance to prevent and punish the keeping of public dance halls within the city of Astoria.” The measure reads in part:
It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to own, or conduct, or maintain within the corporate limits of the city of Astoria, any public dance hall, generally known as a hurdy gurdy house, or a place habitually kept open for public dancing and drinking.
Any person violating any of the provisions of this ordinance, shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $150 or by imprisonment in the city jail.

The milk team of Henningsen & Co. ran away at an early hour this morning and it was several hours before it was discovered where it had gone. After striking a telegraph pole the horses were released from the wagon and later were found at their home stable, munching hay.

Boxing Commission Names Tucker Head
The new Astoria boxing commission met yesterday afternoon and elected Jack Tucker chairman and A. C. Fulton secretary. Mickey Cosper, matchmaker under the old boxing commission, will be retained as matchmaker for the present at least, it was announced. Other members of the boxing commission are Paul Thompson, W. F. McGregor, Dr. Arthur Van Dusen.
