AVA's 12th annual Student Show closes today, Sunday, May 24. The concept for this show was the brainchild of AVA Education Program Coordinator, Andie Sterling, many years ago. The 12x12s are meant to emulate being in a record store. The teachers all loved having a separate project to give their students, so it stuck. City Lumber has been a wonderful partner through the years. Supporting local businesses that support nonprofits makes a difference. 💚 Supporting youth art makes a difference too! 💸

Thanks to current AVA Education Program Coordinator Keri Domer for organizing this beloved show and to all the teachers and students for participating.

AVA is open today from 11 - 3. Don't forget to vote for People's Choice!

OPPORTUNITY FOR ARTISTS
AVA artist-in-residence
July 1 - December 31, 2026

Astoria Visual Arts invites artists residing in Clatsop or Pacific County to apply to be AVA’s next artist-in-residence! One artist will be selected to receive a rent-free studio space at the Astoria Studio Collective, located at 372 10th Street, Astoria, for a period of six months.

Artists working in any media are eligible to apply. The deadline for applications is June 10. Learn how to apply at astoriavisualarts.org.

The AVA a-i-r program is designed to encourage the creative, intellectual, and professional growth of local artists who provide so much to the cultural landscape of our community. Finalists are chosen on the basis of merit and need by an independent selection panel of arts professionals and patrons. Artists who have received the residency are eligible to reapply.

AVA has supported 41 artists through this program since 2015, which is made possible by AVA Members and the Oregon Community Foundation. Thanks also to the Astoria Coffeehouse & Bistro and Fine Art Supply for supporting this program.

Congrats Midori Hirose and Slayer Rowan for being selected for this year's Coastal Oregon Artist Residency!

Midori Hirose is an interdisciplinary artist newly rooted in Astoria with an extensive background as a professional artist and community organizer. Her practice revolves around reclaiming and reimagining discarded materials, transforming them into sculptural works that invite new narratives about place, history, and transformation. Midori Hirose

Slayer Rowan is also relatively new to the Astoria area, describing the COAR opportunity as a dream come true. Sculpture has remained a constant thread throughout his life and creative practice. He works in many mediums and is fueled by a deep curiosity and eagerness to learn new skills and techniques. Most recently, Slayer earned his welding certification through Clatsop Community College, expanding the possibilities for his art-making practice.

This residency is a partnership between Recology Western Oregon and AVA, and runs June 1 - September 30 with a public exhibition at AVA in October. The artists get the opportunity to salvage reclaimed items from the Astoria Transfer Station, will receive a stipend of $1000/month for 4 months and get a dedicated studio space during the residency.
