Sonia Manzano became beloved as SESAME STREET’s Maria, a role she played for 44 years. But while millions know Sonia as Maria, few know about her remarkable journey from the South Bronx to the original off-Broadway company of Godspell, to becoming the first Latina to play a regular role on television, and to her creation of the award-winning PBS show ALMA'S WAY.

We’re thrilled to welcome Sonia Manzano and director Ernie Bustamante on June 20 & 21 for special screenings of STREET SMART: LESSONS FROM A TV ICON featuring interviews (including Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer Stephen Schwartz), original animation, and scripted scenes that bring Sonia’s past to life.

Part of our ongoing Jim Henson’s World series. Get tickets: https://movingimage.org/event/street-smart/2026-06-20/

Today, May 31, catch back-to-back screenings of landmark L.A. films—both captured in stunning black-and-white cinematography.

At 3:00, see THE EXILES (1961, 35mm), a rare look at a community of Indigenous people who are living in the downtown section of the city known as Bunker Hill, after having been displaced from their reservation. Refusing to construct a portrait of melancholy outsiders, director Kent Mackenzie instead shows his subjects as part of the city’s nightlife and culture.

At 4:45, see KILLER OF SHEEP (1977), the most widely celebrated film of the fabled “L.A. Rebellion” of Black filmmakers revolutionizing cinema in the seventies, this American masterpiece was written, shot, and edited by Charles Burnett. An impressionistic portrait of a Black family man eaten up by life’s financial burdens, fighting to save his soul and support his family in Los Angeles’s Watts neighborhood, the film is an aesthetic triumph, touched as much by tenderness as frustration, and fueled by the internal emotional rhythms of all its characters.

Both are part of the series By the People, for the People: Real American Lives, which continues through July 5.
