Hello and welcome back to ! In the final installation of our examination of the climate controls of the , we are taking a look at some of the many transom windows around the AEBM. If you look up, you will notice that many of the doors in the home have small windows above them, and these are called transom windows. They were made to open and close (though most are no longer operable) to allow air to flow between rooms even with the doors closed. A couple of the doors still have the hardware to open and close the transom windows still attached to the door frames!

Hello and welcome back to ! Today we are continuing our look at the climate control of the by looking at the beautiful fireplace in the Front Parlor of the AEBM. While the house has 4 chimneys, only one fireplace remains. It is here in the front parlor that Amelia Earhart's grandfather Alfred Otis would tell Amelia and her sister bedtime stories, and here in front of the fireplace that the family could warm up on a cold winter's day.

Hello and welcome back to ! Today we are continuing our examination of climate controls in the by looking at the two flue covers in the AEBM. A flue is a chimney-type way for smoke to be vented out of a space, and many old houses now have covers over the holes leading to the flues. The AEBM has two flue covers, one in the Gift Shop, which was the old Kitchen, and one in the Formal Dining Room. The stoves that would have been attached to these flues would be used for cooking, but also for keeping the building warm during the cold winter months.

Hello and welcome back to ! This month, we are going to take a look at how the Otis Family (and many other Victorian Era Americans) kept their house at a comfortable climate. There was no central heating or air conditioning, but they used other methods, including radiators. There are a variety of radiators throughout the AEBM, but they all worked in a similar manner, by pumping warm steam through the tubes to warm the metal so it could radiate heat to the rooms!

Hello and welcome back to ! Today, we are taking a look at the family Bible that is in the Judge's Parlor. It is a very large book, measuring about 11 by 15 by 4 inches. Family Bibles were not just a religious book in the Victorian Era when Amelia Earhart was growing up, but also a critical method of recording family history. Many historians use family Bibles to help understand the everyday lives of people throughout history. The Otis Family did indeed have a family Bible that they used, but it is still owned by Amelia Earhart's family, so it is not held in the AEBM. However, AEBM staff has a good relationship with her family, and has been able to record the information inside. The last picture is of the cover of the Otis family Bible!

Hello and welcome back to ! Today, we are taking a look at a parlor organ book printed here in Atchison, Kansas at the turn of the 20th century. It sits atop our American Melodeon Organ in the Formal Parlor of the house. Formal Parlors were rooms meant to house guests, parties, and events, so they were typically the most nicely decorated rooms in the home. A common inclusion in formal parlors would be a type of musical instrument, like a piano or parlor organ for entertainment.

Hello and welcome back to ! Today, we are taking a look at the Melodeon in the Front Parlor. Melodeons are a style of reed organ that were common in the 19th century. In the Victorian Era, when Amelia Earhart was growing up, parlors were rooms used for entertaining guests, and often had some sort of musical instrument, like a parlor organ or a piano. This melodeon is not original to the home, but is a style that was common during Amelia's childhood.

Hello and welcome back to ! Today, we are taking a look at the twin metal greyhound statues in front of the AEBM. While these statues are not original to the house, Amelia Earhart's grandmother, Amelia Otis, is said to have liked metal animal statues, and had multiple on the property, including dogs and a stag. These statues were donated to the house by Virginia Tonsing, the child of one of Amelia Earhart's cousins, in honor of the metal statues that used to be on the property.

Hello and welcome back to ! Today, we are taking a look at a pair of brown leather shoes owned and worn by Amelia Earhart. These Mary Jane-style shoes have one strap and were made by the Hellstern & Sons Shoe Company. Below the brand name, the insole says Brevetés, Paris; meaning that they were patented in Paris.

Michelle Yu and her father Bo, songwriting and recording artists of the song “Where Are You, Amelia,” and family made a lifetime milestone visit to the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum October 23. During their visit, Michelle and Bo got the chance to deepen their connection to Amelia Earhart and her legacy. Indeed, Amelia Earhart’s legacy has so moved Michelle that she donated part of her earnings from her summer lifeguard job to the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum. We are honored to be able to continue inspiring future generations with Amelia Earhart’s legacy, and we hope that you too may consider a donation to the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum to continue to preserve Amelia Earhart’s legacy in honor of Michelle and the many young minds still being inspired today. https://www.ameliaearhartmuseum.org/donate
