Did you know the word yōkai comes from people’s fear and curiosity about the unknown forces in the natural world? Over time, those fears took shape in illustrated scrolls, bringing mysterious spirits and creatures vividly to life.
With the rise of woodblock prints (nishiki-e), yōkai reached wider audiences, and their stories began to shift. By the Edo period, these once-frightening figures became playful, familiar characters, woven into everyday culture and still sparking imagination today.
