Did you know the word yōkai comes from people’s fear and curiosity about the unknown forces in the natural world? Over time, those fears took shape in illustrated scrolls, bringing mysterious spirits and creatures vividly to life.
With the rise of woodblock prints (nishiki-e), yōkai reached wider audiences, and their stories began to shift. By the Edo period, these once-frightening figures became playful, familiar characters, woven into everyday culture and still sparking imagination today.

Happy International Museum Day!

Museums are places of creativity, connection, play, belonging, and boundless learning. Today, we celebrate the joy of experiencing art together in a space where stories and ideas from different points of view come together to inspire us.

OUMA strives to make art accessible for everyone through its diverse exhibitions, community days, guided tours, and hands-on learning opportunities.
As part of Oglethorpe University, the museum also supports the next generation of art leaders by offering opportunities for students through the museum studies minor and professional experiences that connect classroom learning with the world of museums and the arts.

This Museum Day, we invite you to spend time with us and experience our three distinct exhibitions on view!

It’s cherry blossom season! “The Extraordinary Life of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama: An Illuminated Journey by Rima Fujita” artist Rima Fujita illustrates salient moments in the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, including quiet moments like his daily walks among cherry trees grown from saplings gifted to him from Japan decades ago.

Rooted in Japanese culture, cherry blossoms symbolize renewal and impermanence which echo the mindfulness at the heart of this exhibition.

Come experience these moments of reflection at OUMA this season.
