Fine Arts Workshop

Fine Arts Workshop Fine Arts Workshop - Atlanta, GA This program is the heartbeat of Fine Arts Workshop. It has two tiers—a Studio Program and an At-Large Program.

Fine Arts Workshop provides exceptional educational workshops in the visual arts and writing for emerging, established and life-long learning students. Fine Arts Workshop is pleased to offer a true Atelier experience–a tradition of knowledge and studio practice that link together artists spanning nearly 700-years. The Atelier Program is comprised of specific structures—from studio space, to one-o

n-one guidance, to group critiques—that provide the discipline and support necessary for personal and artistic growth. Led by Michael David, who has taught Graduate Painting at Savannah College of Art & Design and Princeton University, and whose work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum, the Atelier Program provides a one of a kind environment of instruction, career development, and artistic community and support.

Congratulations to TRACY MURRELL on her ONE-PERSON EXHIBITION AT RIALTO CENTER!

Opening Reception: Thursday, August 7, 5-8 pm

RIALTO CENTER 2014-15 Visual Arts Series present "Through My Eyes" works by Tracy Murrell. A series of silhouetted vintage and contemporary female icons painted in flat planes of color.

Murrell’s work challenges racialized gender stereotypes imposed on the African-American feminine form in popular media. Historically, problematic depictions simultaneously reflected and created negative tropes about black women and black female bodies resulting in reductive imagined identities. Murrell’s images embody the feminine form as graceful and strong suggesting an integrity often dismissed or ignored previously. Through her lens, the female figure is portrayed in a universal manner through silhouettes that open them up to interpretation not based on race.

First Thursdays Downtown ArtsWalk Exhibition Dates & Hours: July 10 - Aug 23, 2014 M-F, 10AM - 4:30PM or by appointment

Good job artists, we're proud of you and of all the artists in our FAWS family. All your hard work is paying off!

Art for Action is featuring Khalilah Birdsong, who is an abstract painter residing in Atlanta, GA. She is a member of the Fine Arts Atelier under the direction of the renowned artist, Michael David. In Khalilah's work Michael notes, “The scale and evidence of physicality of Khalilah Birdsong’s paintings echoes Alfred Leslie, Joan Mitchell, Jean Riopelle and the late abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter. Birdsong differs from many of these early abstract painters in that while many of those artists were tied to references to nature, and a looser freer gesture, Birdsong combines physicality with a precision and a finely calibrated balance in her work. Make sure to mark your calendars for August 20th!

Michael David, Fine Arts Workshop and Life on Mars Gallery profiled by Lilly Wei in Atlanta's great arts blog Burnaway - thanks Lilly! http://burnaway.org/life-mars-atlanta/

The Bushwick section of Brooklyn saw the opening of a new gallery, Life on Mars, this past October at 56 Bogart Street, a building that hosts a dozen galleries in an area that went from near zero to plus 40 in what seemed a blink of an eye. The director and curator is Michael David […]

Artists: here's your chance to hear the great Arnold Mesches talk about his life and art, in conversation with Michael David and the art historians/critics Irving Sandler and Robert C. Morgan - live from Life on Mars Gallery, May 4, 2014

I began thinking that something else was happening, and that something else had to be brought into my thinking as a social realist painter — how the hell can I bring that into my thinking as an image maker?
