What makes Atlanta sports culture so special?

In a recent episode DeKalb Talks Tourism, artist Sheila Pree Bright and Carlos Museum Works on Paper Curator Andi McKenzie discuss Footwork: Where We Gather, an exhibition that explores the connections, traditions, and sense of belonging cultivated through sports culture in Atlanta.

From United tailgates to Falcons fandom, Bright's photographs turn the camera toward the fans themselves, revealing how sport becomes community, tradition, and family.

🎧 Listen to the conversation, then experience the exhibition in person before it closes on July 19.

📅 Join us Sunday, June 7, from 3–4 p.m. for Where We Gather: The Communities We Create, a free public conversation featuring Sheila Pree Bright, Francisco Stenger of Soccer in the Streets, Bem Joiner of Atlanta Influences Everything, and moderator Andi McKenzie.

Through self-developed tours exploring compassion, conflict, compromise, and love, Asmita Lehther helped visitors connect with works of art — and with one another — during her time as a Student Guide at the Carlos Museum.

Over the past year, Asmita created and led tours including Art in Conflict and Compromise, The Persistence of Love, and Compassion: Look Closer, inspired by the exhibition Compassion: What Moves You?. Through these experiences, she encouraged visitors to engage thoughtfully with themes of empathy, identity, and human connection across the museum’s collections and exhibitions.

For graduating senior Miranda Rhoads, working at the Carlos Museum strengthened an interest in museum education and object-based learning.

An Art History major and Carlos Student Guide, Miranda says her experience at the museum helped develop valuable skills in connecting with others through collections and exhibitions — experiences she hopes to carry into future museum work.

One memory that will stay with her is welcoming students from her former high school to the museum and sharing that experience together.

Join us in congratulating Miranda and the Class of 2026, and thank you for all you contributed to the Carlos Museum community.

The Carlos Museum’s 2026 Wrapped Up in Reading summer reading list is now available online!

Featuring books for a wide range of ages and reading levels, the list invites young readers to explore art, history, cultures, and stories connected to the museum's collections and exhibitions.

This year’s list includes exciting new additions alongside returning favorites from past summers. We’ve also introduced a new “How-To” category featuring books that explore creative processes including drawing, printmaking, and cyanotypes.

Children who read five books from the list and return their completed Reading Diary to the museum by September 6, 2026, will receive prizes and complimentary admission.
