African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey

African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey AAHMSNJ Features African American cultural artifacts and the work of local artists in Southern New J And that's where the idea came from.

"Folks used to come to my house and say, This place looks like a museum. I had this quest for collecting just for me. Then, all of a sudden, something came over me and I thought, How dare you collect all of this just for yourself? You could share all of this."
- Ralph E. Hunter, Sr., Museum Founder

The African American Heritage Museum Of Southern New Jersey brings to life the African American ex

perience of the 20th Century as it documents the struggle of one group of Americans to carve their own place in the wider cultural landscape. With a permanent home in the heart of Southern New Jersey, and a traveling museum with access to over 3,000 historical and cultural artifacts, the museum offers a unique opportunity to open a window to the mindset of successive generations of African Americans and provides an understanding to its cultural evolution.

AAHMSNJ is deeply saddened by the passing of our dear Board Member Rita Mack. Rita was a long-time friend and supporter of AAHMSNJ. Not only did she sponsor our “Talking About Herstory” exhibit, but she was one of the AC area women the exhibit heralded. Having recently joined our Board, she was an ardent cheerleader for the impact our mission has had and will continue to have for generations to come.

Rita's death is not only a great loss for the museum, but also for Atlantic City and our region, which she supported with her great generosity and deeds. She will be missed tremendously.

We will hold space in our hearts for Rita’s husband, Anthony.

We at the African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey are tremendously saddened by the death of Vincent Jackson. He was a tremendous reporter and great friend to the museum, often covering our events and exhibits for The Press of Atlantic City. He also donated items to our collection that pays tribute to the late artist Prince. Jackson will be missed by us and so many others. He was a beloved member and voice of the AC community. May he rest in peace.
