This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice helped protect the freedoms we often take for granted, including the five freedoms of the First Amendment. At the First Amendment Museum, we are reminded that these rights endure because of those who defended them.

The garage at the Gannett House, home of the First Amendment Museum, has been named one of Maine's 2025 Most Endangered Historic Places by Maine Preservation.

This designation highlights not only the historical significance of this site , but also the urgent need to preserve it for future generations. The Gannett House garage has the distinction of being Augusta, Maine's first automobile garage.

Preserving this space means protecting the history that lives within its walls and ensuring it remains accessible as a place of learning, reflection, and dialogue. You can learn more about this designation here: https://www.mainepreservation.org/most-endangered-2025/2025/9/19/gannett-garage

Today is the National Day of Prayer, a moment observed by many across the country in reflection, faith, and community. It is also a powerful reminder of one of the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment: the freedom of religion.

This freedom protects every individual’s right to practice their beliefs, or choose not to, freely and without Government interference. At the First Amendment Museum, we explore how this freedom has shaped our nation, and why it remains essential to a free and inclusive society: https://firstamendmentmuseum.org/tag/freedom-of-religion/

It’s the Homeschoolers Of Maine's Maine Home Education Week, a time to celebrate the flexibility, curiosity, and independence that define homeschooling. At the First Amendment Museum, we offer hands-on learning experiences that bring civics to life. Students explore the five freedoms through interactive exhibits, real-world history, and meaningful discussion that connects directly to what they’re learning at home.

It’s an opportunity to deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and empower students to think critically about their rights and their role in society. Plan a field trip and make history part of your homeschool experience: https://firstamendmentmuseum.org/teacher-resources/field-trips/
