. Today represents the fourth day of Kwanzaa. On each day of Kwanzaa, celebrants reflect on one of seven principles. The fourth principle is Ujamaa - or Cooperative Economics. As a young woman, Harriet Tubman’s father, Ben Ross taught her how to handle an oxen team in order to haul timber on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Known to outwork her male counterparts, Tubman was able to “hire out” her services to gain a small income for herself. Sometime in the 1840’s Tubman hired a lawyer to check the official records concerning her mother’s enslavement. Through this, she proved that her mother, Harriet “Rit” Ross, should have been freed in the early 1830’s. The skills she learned from her father helped secure her mother’s freedom.

Since 2019, states across the country have declared September as International Underground Railroad Month in an effort to highlight and bring awareness to the Underground Railroad stories in the United States and beyond. Check out the routes of the Underground Railroad below. Agents on the Champlain Line of the Underground Railroad assisted fugitive slaves in western Vermont and seven Northeastern New York counties—Washington, Saratoga, Warren, Essex, Clinton, Franklin, and St. Lawrence. Throughout the region, agents provided fugitives with food, clothing, safe places to rest and medical attention. Many times they paid for the cost of their transportation to the next station.
