We always love learning about fellow Millay aficionados, so we were happy to read a recent New Yorker “Talk of the Town” piece about celebrated actor Ellen Burstyn’s discovery of her poetry when she was a teenager. We understand that she writes about Millay in her new book, Poetry Says It Better, too—can’t wait to read it.

Ellen, if you see this -- we’d love to host you at Steepletop one day!

Millay wrote in a May 19th letter:
“The crab apple tree by the front door is in full blossom and was never so beautiful as this spring.”

The tree dates to the 1890s and can be seen in historic photographs from the Bailey family’s ownership of the property.

It's beauty is still true at 130+ years old, born sometime around the same time as the poet.

With profound sadness, we announce the death of Holly Peppe (1950-2026), literary executor of Millay’s work since 2012 and president of The Millay Society from 1986-2001. Diagnosed with leptomeningeal cancer in 2022, Holly continued to advise the Society, as well as writers and researchers, until recent months.

Well-known as the pre-eminent scholar on Millay, Holly wrote her Ph.D. thesis on the poet’s work; her essays anchored numerous collections of Millay’s poetry published by Penguin Classics, Harper Perennial, and Yale University Press over the decades, as well as YUP’s recent publications of the poet’s diaries and letters. She lectured widely on Millay’s life and work, and was a generous, yet rigorous, mentor to scholars, researchers, and writers around the world.

Holly first came to Steepletop in the early 1980s, while she was working on her thesis, to meet the poet’s sister, Norma Millay, founder and first president of The Millay Society, and lived on the property until Norma’s death in 1986. Upon Norma’s death, Holly took over her role as president of the Society.

An inspiring and tireless ambassador for Millay’s work, Holly was also a consummate communications professional who established her own successful firm, as well as an accomplished poet.

The Millay Society deeply mourns her passing.
