It is part of Thornton Road Studios in South Central Austin just south of Oltorf Road and just east of South Lamar. Artist Rick VanDyke purchased Cone 10 Studios and renamed it to Fireseed Clay Art Studios in early 2013. Meet our featured artist for this week: Katy David! Come see her and a bunch of other artists this weekend at our annual Holiday Show!

Katy David is a painter and and a ceramic artist, and each practice informs and shapes the other.⁣
⁣
She works primarily with hand-building using slump and hump forms and slip-casting. She creates surface patterns and design with sgraffito or underglaze in bright and clear colors. Alternating between functional and sculptural pieces, she sometimes combines the two as in her coral/barnacle encrustation pieces.⁣
⁣
Katy's favorite part of working with clay is the tactile nature of it all: the cool and pliable feel of clay, the viscous nature of casting slip, the chalk-iness of underglaze. ⁣
⁣
Katy’s main artistic philosophy is attempting but not achieving perfection. Working with clay feels to her like a group project, where the artist/creator has a part to play, but all the other components (kiln, glaze, underglaze, clay and slip) each have a say in the final product, which creates mostly happy accidents (and some interesting disasters).⁣

Our artist for Meet the Artist Monday this week is Mallory Blair Randle:⁣

Mallory Blair Randle has been making things out of clay and teaching others how to do it for over thirty years. He also works in bronze, silver, colored pencil, and water color. His work appears in public and private collections across North America and abroad.⁣
⁣
His sculptural terra cotta flutes are unglazed, decorated with slips, oxides and ceramic stains, burnished to a rich luster with a polished agate, and bisque fired. They are primitive instruments having a mellow, recorder-like tone, and have been played by musicians both professional and amateur.⁣
