The fence is up. The pool is empty. The season has ended. .lauerart painting “Closed for the Season” depicts a physical and temporal boundary, the disappointing moment when access is denied. But you needn’t experience that regret, join us at the gallery between 1 and 5pm today, Sunday, May 17th for your final chance to stand before these works, chat with the artist, and feel the pull of water and community that Lauer so luminously captures. Unlike the silent, shuttered pool in this painting, the human impulse to immerse ourselves in water is eternal. From the indigenous tribes that enjoyed the springs before Barton claimed them to the bathers in Lauer’s contemporary canvases, the ancient mammalian urge to enter the water persists. Swimming is ritual, sport, joy, necessity, meditation. See artist Ruth Lauer’s precise vision of an ancient connection one final time before the gates close.

We see here an image from 1946, courtesy of the Austin History Center, in which a woman poses beside the pool at a party where no one seems to be interested in swimming. She is dressed to impress, present to be seen. The pool is a social stage, a symbol of status. Quite the opposite of the mirthful world of our current exhibition, .lauerart “Get Wet!” For artist Ruth Lauer, the pool isn’t a backdrop but a destination. The point is to feel the water and belong to something convivial and real. This will be the final week to see how Lauer affirms the pool as a realm of pure, unguarded joy. We are open Thursday-Sunday, 1-5pm.

The 1920s ushered in a new freedom in swim culture. Women ditched the Victorian bathing costumes, bobbed their hair, shortened their hemlines, and claimed Barton Springs as their own. 100 years later and we’re still working towards total freedom from social expectations, but with better SPF. .lauerart exhibition, “Get Wet!” documents the here and now of poolside playtime. The swimsuit has changed. The fun? That’s timeless. Our gallery will be open Thursday-Sunday 1-5pm for this final weekend of the exhibition.

In the water, we learn what it means to be held. Buoyancy is more than the result of physics calculations that keeps us from sinking; it is a positive force in nature that allows us the joy of floating. In .lauerart painting “Modern Day Madonna”, a mother and child float together, suspended in a moment of perfect trust. Mother is an extension of the water: essential, sustaining, and a medium through which we discover our own ability to rise. Art, motherhood, and swimming, are all about creating a space where we feel safe enough to let go. This Mother’s Day, bring the woman who has held you up and float through the gallery together. Take in Lauer’s collection of pool paintings and remember the laughter filled summers and the simple joy of being held. We are open from 1-5pm.

Flip flops or flippers? Floatie or weights? One’s choice of swim time accesories can be indicative of what we are seeking from our time in the pool, respite, sport or maybe a mix of both. In .lauerart exhibition, “Get Wet” on display at our gallery through May 17th, the artist explores not only the places we swim, but also the objects that accompany us as we do so. Lauer will be in the gallery during our open hours today, Saturday, May 9th, from 1-5 pm, so stop by or tell us in the comments, what are your pool essentials?

Big Stacy Pool has been a cornerstone of Austin’s Travis Heights community since 1937, when the city added “Big” to distinguish it from the nearby Little Stacy Wading Pool. Built with New Deal funding through the Works Progress Administration, the pool and its historic bathhouses remain contributing landmarks to the district’s National Register listing. Its natural thermal springs drew crowds immediately and continue to make it a beloved destination nearly a century later.

Artist .lauerart portrays one facet of Stacy’s enduring legacy in her painting, “Grackles at Stacy Pool” In our current exhibition, “Get Wet.” The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on what these spaces mean to our community, and as our gallery visitors have shared, Big Stacy undeniably rocks. The gallery is open Thursday-Sunday 1-5pm.
