Mission: To serve the City of Avenal through the collection, curation, and exhibition of artifacts that preserve and share the unique history of Avenal, California. The Avenal Historical Society and Museum is dedicated to creating meaningful cultural experiences that strengthen our community's sense of discovery, learning, and civic pride. History:Formally established in May of 1998, the Avenal Hi

storical Society and Museum is a local leader in conservation and education. This one-of-a-kind museum is run by a committed team of volunteers on the site of the first church house in Avenal, California. Since its opening, the Historical Society has secured numerous bequests that have been curated into exhibitions open to the public. When the Milham Exploration company discovered oil in Avenal, it developed into so much more than a boomtown; in fact, it was widely known as the "Oil Fields Capital" in Central California. With the help of inspired residents, the Historical Society has been able to capture much of the local history, including the community's transition into the "Pistachio Capital of the World." This is largely due to the Museum's naturally stimulating features, which include original exhibits and the preservation of the church's pews. Unlike larger cities, Avenal relies on its residents - lovingly dubbed Old Timers - rather than historians for its chronicles. Thus, the Museum plays a vital role in facilitating the gathering and passing down of oral history. The Museum is open on Saturdays and upon request any other day. It is a popular stop, particularly for younger audiences, during Old Timers' Day, which is celebrated every May.

The Avenal Museum is excited to share our latest newsletter with our members! đź“°

Inside, you’ll find a look back at 2025, updates on new leadership, and the continued work to preserve Avenal’s history—from expanding our “Gone But Not Forgotten” archives to digitizing old yearbooks for future generations.

We also highlight stories from our past, like Avenal’s connection to the film Boom Town, along with updates on community growth, including new local groups, improvements across the city, and what’s ahead for the Museum.

Most importantly, this newsletter is a reminder that this place only exists because of our members, volunteers, and community support.

We hope you enjoy it—and even more, we hope to see you in person.

Join us on Old Timers’ Day, May 2nd. The Museum will be open from 10am–5pm with refreshments and a chance to step back into Avenal’s history. 🏛️

✨ Happy New Year from the Avenal Museum! ✨

This morning, the Museum Board held its first meeting of 2026 to kick off the year. While we usually gather for breakfast out of town, this year we stayed local and invited the Avenal Rotary to join us. Great conversation, great food, and exciting plans ahead.

A warm welcome to our newest Historical Society members:
• Lucy Gonzalez
• Dominic Ricardo
• Susan Hightower
• Shara Bryant
• Lettie McLemore
• Alvaro Preciado

Thank you to our new Secretary, Francisco Lopez, and Vice-President, Vicky Tippins, for cooking, and to Mayor Preciado for stopping by. Here’s to a great year ahead! 🏛️
