As we approach a new year, there are several things that weigh heavy on my heart. Primarily in regards to our planet, and the way humans treat her, and the other organisms that also call it home.
I have always had a deep love, and appreciation for our natural world and all the flora and fauna that inhabit it.
As time has passed in my life I have found myself becoming ever more aware of how our choices impact our planet and the other animals we share it with. This awareness has heightened my desire to protect our quickly degrading ecosystems, and to speak out for those whom we refuse to listen to.
Last year I decided to go back to school for Environmental and Natural Resources Economics. A decision that has taught me to look at the world, and the unseen, too often ignored, repercussions of our choices in a critcal and profound way. This decision has only fueled my desire to make more educated choices that are based off compassion, science, and sustainability.
As humans it's easy to ignore changes that happen slowly, especially when those changes do not immediately conflict with our everyday conveniences, traditions, and habits.
Earth has been floating around for approximately 4.5 billion years, homo sapiens have only been present for approximately 300,000 years. Geologically speakeing, humans have but a blink in time of existence on this planet. And yet, we have caused more environmental, and planetary damage than any other species. We have caused entire ecosystems to collapse, countless species to go extinct, ocean acidification, vast deforestation, mass killings of trillions of animals annually, the list goes on.. and on.
In the modern day, our damage persists via our choices. How and where we spend our money can feed a system, and the markets whose goals are solely to make more money, despite in many cases, their irreversible global damage.
The majority of humans living in urban areas today have the choice. The choice to pick the product that has less environmental damage behind it, the product that did not cause animals to suffer, the product that can be reused instead added to a landfill, the product that is sustainable.
As the new year begins, and as our generations begin to see the impact of climate change unfold before our eyes I urge you to consider how your choices affect not only yourself, but all the other species, ecosystems, and environments around the world.
This year, dare to care.
Dare to care about the planet.
Dare to care about species other than your own.
