Message from Monica Diaz, Executive Director, VHA Homeless Programs Office
September 2024

September doesn’t just bring cooler temperatures and the smell of pumpkin spice. We mark many important national observances this month, and I’d like to focus today on two of them.
The first is National Su***de Prevention Month—which is particularly meaningful at VA, where one of our top priorities is preventing Veteran su***de.
During this season each year, I reflect on the connection between homelessness and su***de risk and how our work can stop homelessness from turning into hopelessness.
Having a place to call home is essential to having good mental health. It can make you feel grounded, safe, and secure. Through the simple act of being able to close a door, you can tune out the rest of the world, take a break, and begin to heal.
When you’re without a home, these feelings evaporate. Losing your housing is devastating. And for those already struggling with mental health concerns, it can be a tipping point.
Veterans already have a higher-than-average risk of su***de. Experiencing homelessness increases that even more, especially in the immediate days and weeks surrounding loss of housing.
According to the 2023 National Veterans Su***de Prevention Annual Report, the su***de rate among Veterans enrolled in VA care with a history of homelessness was 113 per 100,000 in 2021. This is a 38.2% increase from 2020, one of the highest rates of all the subpopulations of Veterans analyzed.
When we protect against homelessness, we also help protect against su***de risk. Through our work, we can give Veterans stability and security. This not only helps them in the short-term, but also gives them the resources they need so their risk of su***de won’t rise if they ever face housing instability again.
If you or a Veteran you know needs housing or mental health resources, help is available. Contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans for immediate assistance, or complete our self-assessment to find support that is designed specifically for you.
Another national observance in September that’s particularly close to my heart, as a native of Puerto Rico, is Hispanic Heritage Month. I’d like to thank all the Hispanic Veterans who have served in our nation’s military and helped secure our freedom.
We recognize that Veterans from historically underrepresented groups, including those of Hispanic descent, can have more roadblocks and barriers to housing thrown in their way.
We remain committed to providing culturally sensitive care and services so that all Veterans, regardless of race or background, are given the same access to housing assistance and the same opportunity to find homes.

Apply for and manage the VA benefits and services you’ve earned as a Veteran, Servicemember, or family member—like health care, disability, education, and more.

Subject: Black Love Sista’s Tea: A Gathering for Wise Souls
Dear Beautiful Souls,
I’m Geraldine Churchwell, Founder & CEO of The Circle of Life Inc, and I’m thrilled to introduce a space where wisdom, warmth, and sisterhood converge—the Black Love Sista’s Tea. 🌟☕
Why Sista’s Tea?
• Because we deserve a seat at the table, too. And not just any table—a beautifully set one, with stories steeped in resilience.
• This isn’t your average tea party. It’s a gathering for black female seniors, aged 50 and above, right here in Phila PA.
What to Expect:
• Safe Space: No judgment, just love. Bring your vulnerability, your laughter, and your truth.
• Monthly Meetups: Let’s sip, share, and learn. In person. Face-to-face. Because our stories deserve eye contact.
• Bring Your Journal: Our cups will overflow with memories, reflections, and dreams.
• Topics on the Table:
o Relationships (the sweet, the spicy, and the seasoned)
o Mental Health (because our minds matter)
o Healthy Eating (nourishing our bodies, one bite at a time)
o Entrepreneurship (because age is just a number)
o Finances (let’s build wealth, not just wrinkles)
Venue Vibes:
• We’re scouting venues—places that resonate with our spirit. And guess what? We’re all about supporting black-owned businesses. Drop your suggestions in the pot! We will set a date, time and place when we get 30 participants.
Speakers Wanted:
• Know someone who can drop wisdom like honey? Nominate them! We’re looking for great speakers to stir our souls.
Tickets, Please:
• All profits flow straight into The Circle of Life Inc Transitional Homeless Shelter. Your cup of tea will fund hope and healing.

The Circle of Life Inc

We are starting a Transitional Homeless Shelter that gets those experiencing homelessness off the street, puts them in temporary shelter, provides services and training, and helps them acquire income and eventually permanent housing.

Our goal is to fundraise to help pay for the client's expenses, start businesses to put profit into the shelter, and provide income for the clients. Our immediate fundraising goal is to raise $15 million dollars. Our purpose is to be a part of the solution to the problem of homelessness.

Thanks

Not good.

Not good.

After tens of thousands of dockworkers walked off the job at midnight, the Biden administration is confronting the complicated politics – and limited toolkit – of a work stoppage in the home stretch of a critical election season in which the economy has taken center stage.

Subject: Urgent Call to Action: Help a Homeless Young Lady
Dear Compassionate Community,
I come to you today with an urgent plea—a call to our collective humanity. The Circle of Life Inc Transitional Homeless Shelter is on a mission, and we need your support more than ever. Let me share our story:
Our Mission:
• We reach out to the public, businesses, corporations, and foundations to acquire donations that directly impact the lives of those experiencing homelessness.
• Our immediate goal: $20,000. Every dollar counts.
The Young Lady in Need:
• She’s 25 years old, four months pregnant, and homeless due to domestic violence.
• Health challenges—ADHD, depression, and Autism—makes her journey even more difficult.
What She Needs:
1. A Job: If you know of any opportunities, please send them our way.
2. Emergency Housing: A house or apartment with at least two bedrooms.
3. Furnishings: Donated items to turn her shelter into a home.
The Reality:
• Yes, there are shelters in the city, but they’re full. The need outweighs the available resources.
• In Philadelphia alone, over 4,000 people are homeless. It’s a crisis we cannot ignore.
Your Call to Action:
• Pause. Reflect. Imagine yourself in her shoes.
• Then, consider making a donation. Every contribution matters.

1. Contact Us:
