The Quayle Bible Collection

The Quayle Bible Collection Baker University's rare Bible and manuscript collection named for Methodist Bishop, W. A. Quayle: former student, professor, and president of Baker.

09/07/2025

Join us as Baker University celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the Quayle Bible Collection with a new exhibit.

God’s Outdoors: The Bible and Nature
πŸ“… Open House: Tuesday, September 9 | 3–4:30 p.m.
πŸ“ Spencer Wing, Collins Library
β˜• Refreshments available during the open house only

Curated by Dr. Nicholaus Pumphrey, the exhibit features rare Bibles, illuminated manuscripts, and historical texts that explore how faith traditions have shaped cultural understandings of nature. Half of the exhibit focuses on Bishop Quayle’s own writings and Natural Theology; the other half examines biblical interpretations of the natural world.

β€œThis exhibit invites us to consider how scripture has inspired both stewardship and symbolism in our relationship with the natural world.”
β€” John Richards, Associate Professor of History

πŸ—“ Exhibit runs September 8, 2025 – May 17, 2026

The Quayle Bible Collection at Baker University presents it's 2021-2022 exhibit "On the Road From Paradise." In honor of one of our past curators, John Forbes, we acquired a text that was missing from our collection: John Milton's "Paradise Lost." This influential text has often been described as the most important text in English literature, rivaling even Shakespeare. If you would like to visit, the Quayle is open Saturday and Sunday 1-4pm or you can book a special tour if you email or call the Quayle Bible Collection or Collins Library. If you visit on Sunday Oct. 3rd, you will need to visit the Collins Library circulation desk to gain access to the Quayle. We will be closed October 11th and 12th for Baker's fall break.
