Galerie Myrtis shares Tawny Chatmon and Delita Martin feature in the forthcoming exhibition "Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art" hosted by The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD). Both artists are amongst a multigenerational and international group of contemporary Black artists selected by curator Key Jo Lee, for whom color is a central element of their work. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore how, for each artist, hues convey themes, emotions, landscapes, precedents, and more.

"Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art" is on view September 27, 2023 – March 3, 2024 at MoAD. Go to the museum's website for more information!

"How do artists use color to guide our perception? In this exhibition, curated by Key Jo Lee, MoAD’s inaugural Chief of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programs, a multigenerational and international group of contemporary Black artists will illuminate the importance of color to both the form and content of their work. Through a series of thematic couplings and groupings, each visitor will explore how each artist employs color to convey mood, identity, architecture, event, etc.

The exhibition, which features seventeen artists, will be accompanied by digital and analog educational tools and programs meant to equip our audiences with new and/or refined questions and language with which to engage contemporary Black art through color."- The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD)

Galerie Myrtis reminds guests “There Within Lies the Gospel: Truth” opens this Saturday (September 2nd) and highlights a selected work by featured artist Delita Martin.

Martin delves into the theory of duality by examining the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Using a combination of printmaking techniques, intricate patterns, hand stitching, and bright geometric forms, the artist creates figures that exist in multiple realms. This serves to illustrate to viewers the interconnectedness of different dimensions and their importance in maintaining balance.

“There Within Lies the Gospel: Truth” also features Tawny Chatmon, Wesley Clark, Morel Doucet, Monica Ikegwu, M. Scott Johnson, and Felandus Thames. The exhibit celebrates the rich history of black religious and spiritual traditions while challenging how these practices continue to evolve and adapt in response to contemporary social and cultural realities.

The opening reception will be held at Galerie Myrtis, 2224 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, September 2nd from 2:00 ‐ 6:00 pm. No appointment is necessary to attend.

The exhibit runs from September 2 – October 21, 2023. Gallery hours: Wednesday – Saturday from 2:00 – 6:00 pm by appointment. Hours extended during special events. For additional information on this exhibition, please contact the gallery at (410) 235‐3711 or Ky Vassor, Gallery Manager, at [email protected]. "Presented are thought-provoking works by Black Maryland-based artists who pay tribute to the resisters, the freedom fighters, past and present, who, through a lifetime commitment or single act of bravery, have asserted, declared, and validated Black humanity. Their paintings, photographs, prints, videos, and conceptual works presented through a multigenerational lens give voice to the voiceless and dispossessed. They inspire conversations on empowerment while sanctioning and proclaiming Black existence." - Dr. Myrtis Bedolla, Guest Curator

So, by taking on these projects, artists have been able to offer a tangible reaction to questions that no one has yet fully formulated.” - Lewis Tanner Moore, Foreword for "Shifting Time: African American Artists 2020 - 2021"
