On this day in 1974, Baltimore officially declared “Dr. Lillie Carroll Jackson Day.”

More than 50 years later, her legacy still walks these halls.

From civil rights leadership to community organizing, Dr. Lillie M. Jackson helped shape Baltimore history while living in the very home that now stands as the Lillie Carroll Jackson Civil Rights Museum.

As America approaches 250 years, we’re reminded that Black history is American history and these stories deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.

Special thanks to our incredible interns for helping bring this history to life.

Visit the museum and experience the story for yourself.

This Wednesday, February 25, 2026, join us for a powerful screening of American Coup: Wilmington 1898 — the untold story of the only successful coup d’état in United States history, when a thriving Black community in Wilmington, North Carolina was violently overthrown in 1898.

This is more than a film.
It’s a reminder.
A reckoning.
A call to stay vigilant and informed.

During Black History Month, we reflect not only on triumphs — but on truths. The fight for justice that Miss Lillie Carroll Jackson led here in Baltimore was fueled by understanding our history and refusing to be silent in the face of injustice.

Baltimore didn’t just protest it produced power. Clarence Mitchell Junior helped turn community organization into national civil rights law. This room tells the story of how black families, strategy and unity move the country forward. The question now is simple. How do we continue the work?

Commemorating 60 Years of the Voting Rights Act
On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law—one of the most significant victories of the Civil Rights Movement.

Here at the Lillie Carroll Jackson Civil Rights Museum, we remember the relentless advocacy of Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr., a Baltimore native and NAACP lobbyist, whose tireless work on Capitol Hill earned him the nickname “the 101st Senator.”

Mitchell forged a crucial relationship with President Johnson, helping to shape and push through this landmark legislation that aimed to dismantle voter suppression and expand democratic participation for Black Americans.

As we mark this 60th anniversary, we honor Mitchell’s legacy and the continuing fight for voting rights today.
