Special Feature - Celebrating 60 years

It's time to celebrate! On October 2, the Baltimore Streetcar Museum will host a memorable event as we commemorate 60 years of preserving and sharing the public transportation heritage of Baltimore and beyond. From our humble beginnings with a collection of streetcars stored outdoors in a park to today's beloved institution with exciting future plans, we have come a long way over the past six decades!

The Baltimore Streetcar Museum is honored to collaborate with other organizations that have complementary missions to promote a broader understanding of transportation history and mutual goodwill.

Thus, we are happy to help promote a special milestone for our colleagues at the Manheim Historical Society in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. On Sunday, September 20, from 1-4PM, the Manheim Historical Society will officially celebrate the 100th Birthday of former Conestoga Transportation Company Trolley Car 236. Our Executive Director Matt Nawn is the Master of Ceremonies for this milestone event and will deliver a presentation on the significance of this historical vehicle as part of the afternoon festivities.

For the past several years, volunteers and staff from our museum have assisted the Manheim Historical Society with running maintenance, repairs, and training to ensure this historic vehicle can continue providing a living history experience for visitors from far and near. The Manheim Historical Society in turn assisted our museum by hosting an open house for guests from trolley and streetcar museums from the eastern United States and Canada as an optional activity during an industry event held at our museum in 2023.

Much like the preserved Baltimore streetcars in our collection provide a special connection to local history, Manheim's trolley car 236 provides the same connection for Lancaster County as it is the last intact, preserved, and operational trolley car remaining in this region.

This evening, August 24, marks a special milestone for one of our historic streetcars. On this evening, 25 years ago, our Car 26 carried passengers for the final time in Newark, NJ, concluding a remarkable 52 years of service transporting the citizens of Minneapolis from 1949 until 1953 and then Newark from 1954 until 2001.

Today, Car 26 moves closer to completion after a multi-year, comprehensive restoration. When completed and returned to service, carrying visitors at our museum, it will serve a very important purpose: it will be our first car accessible to guests with wheelchairs or other mobility devices.

Our museum owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who carefully maintained this car during its more than five decades of public transportation service as well as those who made it possible to preserve this car as a historic artifact and those who are patiently, carefully, and methodically restoring it today.

Every one of our historic streetcars has a story to tell. Come visit us and experience the history of public transportation first-hand!

Welcome to our latest Feature Friday!

This week, we feature an exciting regional opportunity to learn more about the history of a unique part of Baltimore's streetcar system in collaboration with the Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum, Maryland History Tours, and HoCo250.

On Friday evening, September 4, Baltimore Streetcar Museum's Executive Vice President, Chris McNally, will deliver an engaging, 90-minute, presentation on "The History of the Number 9 Ellicott City Streetcar Line." The event begins at 7 PM, and tickets are FREE, but limited to first come, first served.

It's Wednesday, which means we are open from 10AM-3PM today as part of our Special Summer Wednesday’s program, offering discounted day pass tickets for all visitors!

If the weather cooperates and we have sufficient crew members, you might be able to catch a ride on one of our two open summer streetcars. Car 1164, the larger summer car in our collection, dates from 1902 and recently returned to operating status after some minor shop work. Car 554, which is smaller, dates from 1896! These unique Baltimore artifacts are the perfect way to spend a summer day and be transported back in time for a educational ride in history.

Our museum's greatest asset is our people. They are the heart, soul, and life of our museum, and they are more priceless than any vehicle or artifact. Without our volunteers, we cease to exist.
In this post, we especially celebrate our younger volunteers, as they represent our future. Much of our museum's recent significant growth in both membership and volunteer numbers comes from young adults, who have taken major roles in diverse areas such as streetcar operations, restoration and maintenance, infrastructure work, and administrative tasks.

One of our visitors this past Sunday remarked "I am so impressed with this museum. As soon as I entered, I was greeted by a professional crew of young adults who made me feel welcome, explained to me what was included with my admission, and gave me a great experience."

We are truly grateful for every volunteer and staff member, regardless of age, and we are honored they choose to contribute their time to support our organization and community. Thank you!

Looking to beat the summer doldrums? There's nothing quite like a fun and educational ride into history on a vintage streetcar to turn an ordinary day into something special!

Our next "Summer Special Wednesday" is August 12. Every ticket is a day pass for unlimited streetcar rides and unlimited access to our air-conditioned visitor center. All Wednesday tickets are also discounted as a special promotion. Additionally, our museum library is open on Wednesdays, providing yet another reason to visit.

It's the perfect opportunity for visitors of all ages. Maybe your office wants to bring lunch and spend the afternoon at our unique venue. We are happy to host you!
