When asked about the Museum's decision to create a new wax figure honoring Henrietta Lacks, Museum co-founder Dr. Joanne Martin reflected on the responsibility that comes with preserving and presenting the legacies of influential historical figures through wax artistry:

“One of the things that my husband Elmer and I were aware of and said often is that ‘we are being entrusted with a person’s legacy,” said “We want to be respectful of that legacy– it should shine through the wax figure itself and be well made.”

“We have a team of sculptors because it’s a very specialized process,” said Dr. Martin. “You have hair weavers– every part of it has to be right. We come in a variety of colors, so we have to make sure we are getting the skin tone and physical characteristics right.”

Join us for the reintroduction of the Henrietta Lacks wax figure during the 43rd Anniversary Celebration of The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum. Be among the first to experience this renewed tribute to one of the most influential women in modern medical history and witness the unveiling of our newest wax figure honoring Shirley Chisholm.
