The Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that two of our Class of 2024 introductory video documentaries were recognized with by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter (capitalemmys.tv) at its 67th Awards Gala held at the Bethesda Marriott Conference Center on June 21, 2025. Produced and directed by Michael Marx-Gibbons and the Aliceanna Collective, the introductory documentaries were honored with Emmy Awards in the Sports Story – Short Form Content category. These are the first Emmy awards earned by the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame for its short documentaries recognizing its annual honorees.

“I Have the Greatest Job in the World” introduces us to broadcast journalist Tim Kurkjian and his journey from his roots as a budding young reporter for his school newspaper at Walter Johnson High School to lead baseball analyst for ESPN and eventually a call from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown. Intertwined with Tim’s journey as a broadcast journalist is the story of his brother Matt’s fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and the role that baseball played in his battle against this horrific disease. “Tab” tells the improbable story of Talvin Skinner and the 1973-74 University of Maryland – Eastern Shore (formerly Maryland State University) basketball team as it fought its way into the history books as the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to earn its way into a national basketball tournament. After posting a 27-2 record, the UMES basketball team, led by Talvin, was invited to play in the National Invitational Tournament, thereby breaking the color barrier that stood for so long. Following his distinguished college career, Talvin was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics of the NBA, where he spent several seasons. WATCH VIDEO: https://youtu.be/Pu1U2dOxLNg?si=N0PBqzKu5HXTudd7

JUSTIN WINDLE COMPLETES 50TH STATE MARATHON RUN

by Joe DiBlasi

Last month, Baltimore's own Justin Windle, the proprietor of Pappas Restaurants, completed the Maui Oceanfront 26.2 mile Marathon in Hawaii, to conclude his long distance marathon journey in all 50 states. The first 26.2 mile event was in Long Island, New York, where Justin grew up, on May 7, 1995. He moved to Maryland in 1998.

His second came years later in Long Beach, New Jersey in 2001, and his last two were in Alaska and Hawaii.

When Justin finished the race in Maui on January 19, 2025 he became the 2,000th runner to do so, as certified by "The 50 Marathon Club."

According to Club records, the very first runner to complete the 50 state journey was Wally Herman in Honolulu on December 11, 1983.

To date, 2,018 long distance marathoners have completed the all-50 tour. The list includes 30 Marylanders.

The first Marylander on the list is Stan Neumann, October 8, 2000 in Rapid City, San Diego.

Justin's own book, "Running Capacity" details his life of running.

His Dad Ric "crewed" the courses that Justin would run in 38 of the 50 states, supporting Justin with sports drinks, fresh shirts and the like at intervals along the way.

Justin said that running provides enormous time for thinking, contemplating, and praying. He added, "my 50 state marathon journey was much more than completing a marathon in each state. It was more about exploring our beautiful country's landscape, experiencing the people and the cultures that make our country so interesting. I've showed my family (especially with my Dad) a little of what each state has to offer, and experience something fun and unique about that state. I've seen and experienced so many great things during my marathon journey in great big cities like Chicago and DC to small towns like Booneville, Arkansas. The marathon was to me the side activity, but the main goal was to experience what made the marathon location so special. Marathoning is this way, usually with my kids in attendance, transcended the race itself. It was a life changing, life enhancing journey. I am so blessed to have visited every state in this way, and yes, running long distance in general has definitely deepened my relationship with God".

He bonded with his Dad on the trail, and in the final chapter of his book, Justin wrote that his fervent prayer for his Dad is for Dad to enjoy all that God still has to offer, including family, friends, good health, and running. "You will always have running.”

Today, we remember 2022 John F. Steadman Lifetime Achievement Honoree, Carl Runk who recently passed at age 88. Carl was Towson University legendary lacrosse coach from 1967 to 1998. With a 261-161 record, he was then one of seven active Division I coaches to win more than 200 games.

In Carl's words... “We weren’t Hopkins. No one had heard of what was then Towson State Teachers College. My intention at clinics and conventions was to make an impression. I wanted them to remember Carl Runk so when they talked to their players about where to go, they could say, ‘I know of a school where the coach is very personable and you would enjoy playing for him.’"
