When was the last time you walked a farmers market and really analyzed it?

Not as a shopper. As a curator. The market floor is one of the most honest places in the art world β€” artists selling directly, collectors buying without pressure, and everything on display including who connects with what and why.

Our latest Curator's Inbox article shares what we watch for at a farmers market β€” and why it matters for your gallery program.

Do you walk farmers markets as part of how you discover artists β€” or is this a practice you haven't tried yet?

There's something unusually revealing about watching an artist work a live selling environment. You see how they talk about their work, how they read a room, how they handle a browser versus a buyer. It's a different kind of portfolio review β€” and it tells you things a submission packet never will.

Some of the most compelling artists showing in galleries today built their confidence and their collector vocabulary at a Saturday market first. That floor time shows.

I'd genuinely like to know if this is part of your discovery practice. Hit reply below.

Our latest Curator's Inbox article is about exactly this β€” what to watch for when you walk a market, and why it's worth your time.

It sounds different every time β€” "How do I approach a gallery?" "Am I pricing this right?" "Nobody is finding my work and I don't know why."

But underneath every version of the question is the same thing:
I'm trying to build something real here β€” and I'm not sure I have all the tools I need to do it.

That's exactly why Palette to Placement exists.

Once a month, one topic. The real, practical business side of being a working artist β€” pricing, gallery relationships, professional materials, show applications, and everything in between. Written for artists at every career stage, from someone just starting out to someone who's been at it for decades.

Cannon Beach didn't become one of the Pacific Coast's great art destinations by accident.

Artists started arriving in the 1960s β€” drawn by the landscape, the light, the solitude. A few came. Then a few more. Then more after that. Until something shifted. A creative community had formed, almost without trying.

The artists you surround yourself with are your creative weather system.

If you're the most accomplished artist in every room you walk into β€” that might feel good. But there's no one pulling you forward. No one whose work makes yours look at itself honestly.

This issue asks the question every working artist should be sitting with right now:

Where is your Cannon Beach?

Which are you in right now β€” building your market presence, outgrowing it, or somewhere in between?

There's no wrong answer. Some artists are exactly where they need to be, learning the craft of selling in front of a live audience. Others are starting to feel the pull toward something bigger β€” a different stage, a different room, a different kind of collector. And some are still figuring out which direction that pull is pointing.

Wherever you are, it's worth naming it. Hit reply and tell us.

Our latest Palette to Placement article is about exactly this β€” how to use your market years with intention, and how to recognize when they've done their job.

That farmers market booth? It might be the most strategic career move you make as an artist β€” if you know how to use it.

The new Palette to Placement article breaks down how markets build the foundation that the rest of your art career stands on: live audience feedback, pricing confidence, collector conversations, and the kind of self-knowledge that tells you exactly where to go next.
Plus β€” not all "major art fairs" are the same door. We break down the difference, and why it matters for your trajectory.
