Thuan Vu: Kintsugi in the New World
May 15 – August 22, 2026

Kintsugi in the New World features a selection of colorful paintings and monochromatic drawings by Thuan Vu. Kintsugi is the Japanese practice of mending broken pottery by rejoining the pieces using lacquer and gold. The newly repaired object, proudly displaying its golden scars and deemed more beautiful for having survived, is transformed into a newer version of itself.

Embracing this concept, Vu explores how to find wholeness and beauty in the face of loss and trauma, while also building on the notion of repair and acceptance. Vu explains, “I paint pictures of recovered and repaired brokenness that are ultimately images of hope.”

The paintings Kintsugi: Arrangement no. 1 and no. 2 demonstrate how Vu constructs compositions which combine beautifully detailed renderings of flora with fractured lines and shapes. In other works, like Kintsugi Golden Oval no. 1 and no. 2, some of the realistic flowers are left unfinished and float above the blurred surface while framed in lustrous gold. These choices challenge the eye to see more than traditional still-life painting. Vu asks, “Is something considered valuable only if it is perfect, finished, and cohesive? Can we find beauty in our own process of becoming? Are we less if we are not in a constant state of full bloom?”

Vu has developed this body of work over the course of the last five years and states, “My flower paintings are visual reminders to find the beauty in ourselves, our community and our society, even when things look fractured and broken. We must find gratitude for the gift that is our life.”

Thuan Vu was born in Saigon, Vietnam. As Vietnamese refugees, he and his family were resettled in New Orleans, Louisiana where he grew up. Vu now lives in New Haven, Connecticut and has been a Professor of Art at Southern Connecticut State University for over twenty-five years.

Gerri Rachins: Selected Works on Paper, 2008 – 2025
May 15 – September 5, 2026

This exhibition features an array of works on paper by Gerri Rachins, who splits her time between studios in Boston and Cape Cod. Spanning over nearly 20 years of practice, viewers are offered a glimpse into two distinct but connected aspects of Rachins’ creative process. Works defined primarily as drawing-focused occupy their own space, while colorful paintings on paper fill other galleries. The two creative approaches are connected. The flow of the fluid color in the paintings provides structure, not unlike that of the mechanics of drawing.

The activity of drawing is central to the artist’s process but with marks that are laid down in a non-traditional manner. For instance, experimentation in the studio was the genesis for a series of large-scale drawings. Rachins attached graphite to a hand-fashioned tool on a chain that was suspended from the ceiling. Natural forces unite with the artist’s hand to create the works. Through the artist’s interventions with the makeshift pendulum, the graphite moves around the paper to create energetic marks. The arching lines coalesce into forms that the artist discovers, accentuates–and in some of the compositions–further defines through color.

A focal point of the exhibition are dynamic paintings on paper, rich with vivid color and implied depth. Controlled and spontaneous pours of fluid acrylic ink create rich layers and intersecting passages in these abstract compositions. Surfaces are built further through the addition of Flashe vinyl paint, gouache and colored pencil. Color permeates the exhibition, with compositions that range from intense warm tones of reds, pinks and fluorescent oranges to cool tones of rich shades of blues. Transparent passages contrasted with solid forms of color add to the special interplay in the works.

Helter Skelter Paradise: Sam Cady
May 15 – September 5, 2026

Known for his meticulously painted subjects realized on hand-crafted shaped canvases, Maine-based artist Sam Cady explores dual concepts, replete with tension and nuance, in the exhibition “Helter Skelter Paradise.” Images that evoke recreation, comfort and beauty are featured, while in an adjacent gallery, chaos and uneasiness pervade.

What grounds us in turbulent times? Which scenes or objects bring us joy and a sense of calm? In one gallery Cady brings together an assortment of works under the umbrella title of “Paradise.” The selected paintings are subjects of introspection and solace and are imbued with optimism. “My paintings are homages to my subjects. They are “icons” of the everyday world, objects, land/seascapes, weather, light, and how they make us feel”.  Of course, subjects that bring positivity are different for each person but in this installation, we see Cady’s personal vision, history and inspiration.

In contrast, Cady creates a visual overload in the Zillman Gallery as paintings are installed in an unexpected, disjointed manner on several walls. It’s as if the works were swept away suddenly by the roiling winds of a tornado. He comments on the focus of his work during the last five years, “the chaos of the world has made me want to comment on the extremes and contrasts of life with a range of emotional responses from humorous to deadly serious”.

The exhibition also offers a glimpse into his process and sources of inspiration. In ZAM’s intimate Tandy Gallery, the works of various artists who Cady has admired and collected are highlighted— as well as collected objects referencing significant stories and life events.
