The site is open without charge on Patriot Day for those who wish to contemplate or to honor past heroes. New interpretive signs along the battlefield trail make use of primary research and archaeological studies to relate the movements and importance of this Revolutionary War battlefield.

Did you know there are hundreds of historic shipwrecks in Lake Champlain? Join us for a special tour and dive into this exciting underwater history, without getting wet! This scenic boat tour will take you to the sites of some famous local shipwrecks as Museum experts recount their dramatic stories. Watch underwater footage of shipwrecks from the Museum’s archaeology team and underwater Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs), learn about our lake’s unique geology and history, talk with Museum experts, and get a first-hand look at the nature and animals that call these parts of the lake home including eagles, fish, and more. An incredible experience for all ages!

Points of Interest: Lake Champlain Bridge Guided Walk

Learn the history of what surrounds you as you walk across the Lake Champlain Bridge. Chimney Point site administrator Elsa Gilbertson and Crown Point, NY, site manager Sam Huntington lead this guided round trip walk. Meet at Chimney Point. Rain or shine, dress for the weather. Bring a picnic to enjoy before. Fee includes admission to both museums to visit before or after the walk. Light refreshments afterwards.

Atlatl experts Bob and Cheryll Berg of Thunderbird Atlatl teach traditional and modern techniques of atlatl and dart construction, flint knapping, hafting stone points, and cordage making. Please also consider competing in the Northeastern Open Atlatl Competition the following day.

Dig Into Inquiry: Teach With Archaeology (A Project Archaeology Program)

This hands-on, inquiry-based workshop introduces participants to the award-winning Project Archaeology curricula that meet Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These ready-to-use lessons equip you to guide students through the core tools of archaeological investigation—observation, inference, evidence, context, and classification—while meeting curricular needs in science, social studies, art, language arts, and math. This workshop will be taught by Dr. Angela Labrador, an archaeologist and certified Master Teacher of the Project Archaeology curriculum. This program is perfect for grades 3–6 and easily adaptable for older students. The Vermont Archaeology Society is excited to sponsor teachers’ attendance at this workshop and tour. This event is being offered as part of Vermont Archaeology Month. Registration Required.

Join us for a special presentation at 2pm: “Uncovering Artifacts in the Attic: the Archaeology of the Archaeology at Ethan Allen Homestead and Interpreting its Changing Landscape” by Niels Rinehart, archaeologist & Historic Resources Coordinator with Vermont State Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. Artifacts will be on display with project volunteers to answer questions before and after this presentation, 1:00-2:00 & 3:00-4:00.
This presentation is part of a 3-year conservation project sponsored in part by grants from Vermont Humanities and the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership — as well as over 1,000 volunteer hours from over 100 volunteers!

The story involves Frederick Haldimand, Ethan and Ira Allen, Thomas Chittenden, and Justus Sherwood, treachery and intrigue and drama at all levels.

Contributions of Ancient DNA to Understanding the Human Past: from Peopling to Present in the Caribbean by Kendra Sirak
Dr. Sirak will discuss her research with colleagues using ancient DNA to inform archaeological reconstructions of human populations, interaction and mobility. Her presentation will focus on the methods involved in extracting viable human genomic data from archaeological populations and the powerful results generated from regional datasets.
