Phillip Gibbs, author of “Murder and Mountain Justice in the Moonshine Capital of the World”, will be returning to the Bassett Historical Center on May 12, 2026, to talk about his new book, “Sex, Liquor, and Lawlessness in Early Roanoke”. This program,which is free and open to the public, will begin at 10:30am and will be held in the Susan L. Adkins Memorial Meeting Room. Books will be available for purchase from the author.

Fayerdale: The Missing Town

"Fayerdale: The Missing Town" tells the story of how a land grant from the King of England led to the transformation of a wooded wilderness to a thriving mining boom-town. Discover the secrets, hear about the violence, and learn about a little known contribution to the Civil War that changed naval warfare forever. Find out what happened to the town and the events leading up to the Civilian Conservation Corps and the development of Fairy Stone State Park.

Join us on May 19, 2026 at 10:30am as Park Ranger Danny Martin joins us at the Bassett Historical Center to tell this story. This program will be held in the Susan L. Adkins Memorial Meeting Room and is free and open to the public.
