TIME FOR SCHOOL!

Do you need an extra school lesson? Step back in time to the year 1849 with the Babcock Hollow District Number 11 schoolhouse. Elspeth, Walter, George, and Maude are all eagerly awaiting their time traveling friends to stop by!

We are open Wednesday through Sunday from 12-6pm.

Did George remember to leave his slingshot home? He always gets in so much trouble!

Did you know that at the Babcock Schoolhouse there is a gravestone in honor of a cow? This was no ordinary cow, she was “Victoria”. Her owner was Mrs. Ida VanHousen, the school teacher of Babcock Hollow.

Normally a cow is for agricultural use only. But in Mrs. VanHousen’s eyes Victoria was her trusty and beloved pet, who lived to the ripe old age of 29 (likely because she was pampered to the extreme by her loving owner).

Did you know that in 1992 the community of Bath came together to move our schoolhouse off its original foundation and moved it all the way to the Steuben County Fairgrounds in preparation for the bi-centennial of Bath the following year?

Originally located on Babcock Hollow Road, the Bath District No. 11 "Babcock Hollow" Schoolhouse was lifted onto a special truck bed, traveled onto the highway heading west in the east bound lane, and through the heart of Bath in order to make it to the fairgrounds where it now proudly welcomes guests from around the country.

We welcome you to sit at an old school desk, learn how to read and write the old fashioned way, and....if you are naughty....you can wear the dunce cap for your visit!

Visit the schoolhouse from August 13 - 18th during the The Steuben County Fair, 15 E. Washington St, Bath, NY 14810.
