Setting the record straight on our historic fence! 🏰✨

We’ve seen some questions floating around social media about the fence at Louisiana’s Old State Capitol, and we want to give you the official update on exactly what’s happening behind the scenes.

A section of our fence was severely damaged in an automobile accident back in November 2025. (We found it in smithereens.) We are currently moving through the formal bid process and working closely with our insurance provider to finalize the repair plans.

This isn't a standard fence you can buy at a hardware store. It is a one-of-a-kind historic treasure, meaning every single section and intricate piece must be custom-remade and assembled with exact historical accuracy. History cannot be rushed if it's going to be preserved properly.

In the meantime, the temporary fencing is there for a vital reason—to keep our beautiful grounds safe and secure.

As soon as this painstaking restoration is complete, the temporary barriers will come down, and our beautifully restored historic fence will be back in its rightful place.

🚨❤️ In observance and in celebration of Labor Day, Louisiana's Old State Capitol will be open for extended hours THIS FRIDAY, September 4! 🥳 Our doors will be open and ready to welcome you from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

However, we will be closed to the public Saturday, September 5, and will not be participating in Free First Sunday on September 6.

We encourage everyone to stop by Louisiana Old Governor's Mansion for their Fall Into History event, which promises a day of family-friendly fun and activities. 🏛️

🎂🐟 Happy birthday to the "Kingfish," Huey P. Long!

Born on August 30, 1893, Long was known for political drama, but did you know he once completely derailed his own impeachment?

The bearer of this ticket to the Senate impeachment hearings on May 14, 1929, could have expected to see a spectacle like that of the March 25 "Bloody Monday" as they took their seat on the newly built bleachers. However, they would soon be disappointed.

Just two days after the hearings convened, the President Pro Tempore announced he had a petition signed by 15 of the 39 senators to kill the vote to convict Huey Long.

In the weeks prior, while the House voted on and passed eight of the 19 charges against Long, he had been going behind the scenes to bribe and threaten enough senators to secure the two-thirds needed to end the impeachment when it reached the Senate.

🚨❤️ Louisiana's Old State Capitol will be closing early on Saturday, August 29! Instead of our usual 3 p.m. closure time, we will close at 1 p.m. We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

🏰 The materials have officially landed for our major project to restore the exterior of our beautiful castle!

For the next two or more years, the plaster and iron details on our entire exterior will be getting a makeover. 💅 Restoration will begin on the west side facing River Road and continue from there. We will be sure to provide project updates throughout the duration of the work.

We are in it for the long haul, but the results will be well worth it! In the meantime, please excuse our progress and continue to enjoy the rest of our grounds, galleries, programs, and events. 😊
