Today marks the 184th anniversary of the death of William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States. Harrison was the first US president to die in office, forcing the government to decide on a procedure that addressed the ambiguities remaining in the succession process. The norms established for John Tyler's succession were followed on seven occasions when a president died in office. Nevertheless, those norms were not codified in a constitutional amendment until 1967!

Most of us have heard that Harrison died of pneumonia contracted from speaking too long in the rain. But Jane McHugh and Philip A. Mackowiak examined his attending physician's notes in 2014 and concluded, in an article they published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, that he more likely died of septic shock because the White House water supply was had been tainted by its proximity to public sewage.

Good news! The heat is fixed! We'll open up at noon today, just like normal. I expect the heater will have had time to catch up by then.

02/20/2025

Well, the heat is still out at the museum. We'll stay closed for tomorrow, Friday the 21st, but we have high hopes that it'll be fixed tomorrow and we can resume normal hours for the weekend.

02/18/2025

Looks like we're going to stay closed for Thursday, February 20th, for heater repair. We'll look forward to seeing everyone on Friday, the 21st, when we resume our regular hours.

02/18/2025

We're going to close for the rest of the day today because our heating has gone out. It's cold, friends! Tomorrow is Wednesday, our regular day to be closed, so we hope to see you again on Thursday with repaired and fully operational heating.

Stay warm!
