What if what we call “disorder” is really a call to realign, to come back to ourselves, to nature, to each other?
Long before the rise of modern psychology, people understood struggle as a signal ~an invitation to restore balance rather than a defect to be silenced. A woman in grief wasn’t given a diagnosis; she was surrounded by others who had walked that path before her. A man wrestling with visions wasn’t cast out; he was guided to explore what wisdom they carried. Challenges of the mind and spirit weren’t feared but embraced as thresholds to transformation, moments that called for support, not isolation.
Now, even science is catching up. Research in neuropsychology shows that our brains are shaped not just by genetics but by our environment, relationships, and lived experiences. Trauma rewires the nervous system, yet connection, ritual, and a sense of purpose can rewire it back. The body, mind, and soul are never separate ~what affects one affects them all.
True wisdom isn’t about fixing what’s “broken” but about restoring balance. It can be found Sacred Circles, and in the open arms of those who remember what it means to heal together. In song, in firelight, in sacred spaces where our pain is not a burden but a story waiting to be honored.
So perhaps what we call “primitive” was never primitive at all. Perhaps the most ancient ways of healing -rooted in nature, ritual, and community- were always the most advanced.
