Interesting, In reading Dean McLeod's notes from the Bay Point Historical Society it refers to 1960 as the first time the name West Pittsburg shows up in Polk's City Directory of Pittsburg and Antioch. In 1882 my great-grandfather John Enes Vargas settled in the area of today's Bay Point known as the Mota Ranch off of Evora Road. in old family photos from about 1910 that area is noted as the "Old Bay Point Ranch". In the mid-1920's my grandfather Antone Enes went from farming to building residential homes between Alves Lane and Marys Ave. That area would become known as "Enes Tract". The general area at that time was called "Ambrose" due to the naming of the railroad flag stop just east of McAvoy by the railroad as noted in the 1902 Official Guide to Railroads. Hence came the names Ambrose School, Ambrose Ave. & Ambrose Memorial Park. As the area grew between 1920 and 1950 each area had a specific name among residents living there, such as Bella Vista, North Broadway, Home Acres, Bel Air, Orbisonia Heights, Enes Tract, Ambrosia Manor & Shore Acres. When the name West Pittsburg really took hold was in the early 1950's Kathryn Kunstall a writer for the old Pittsburg Post Dispatch started a column called "West Pittsburg Briefs". It became very popular with local residents and the name stuck for many years until the vote to change it to Bay Point in 1993.
