In 1977 Robert Rauschenberg, a renowned American artist known for his innovative approach to art, collaborated with Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) to create a lithograph that supported Jimmy Carter’s candidacy.
Rauschenberg, known for blending political and social commentary into his art, found a way to express his support for Carter, who was a fresh face in American politics at the time, advocating for change and renewal after the Watergate scandal and the resignation of Richard Nixon.
This gesture of supporting Carter through art was part of a broader cultural movement where artists used their platform to engage with political and social issues. Rauschenberg’s work, especially during this period, reflected his concerns with both the individual and collective aspects of society.
Fast forward to today, with President Carter’s passing, ULAE is reflecting on that moment with pride, recognizing its role in the successful election of the 39th President. It’s a poignant reflection on how artists through printmaking can shape or influence political landscapes, even in ways that seem indirect but still powerful.
